Subaru Outback is the top-selling all-wheel-drive model again for Subaru of America, and the Camden, N.J. automaker reports the midsize SUV had 14,724 sales. The Outback was up 5.2 percent compared with May 2021 (13,994 sales).
The Outback is the stand-out model in Subaru of America's SUV lineup, with 64,206 models delivered to customers in 2022. The new rugged Outback Wilderness is a significant reason, and it's been a big hit with the automaker's customers with active lifestyles.

In the announcement, Jeff Walters, Senior Vice President of Sales, said, "The Subaru Outback captured car buyers' attention in May as they seek out safe, family-friendly vehicles that also boast a sense of fun."
What sets the Outback apart?
The 2022 Outback appeals to a broader audience than some SUVs because it handles like a car but has the characteristics of an SUV. The Outback is bigger than a traditional wagon, features more cargo capacity, has a higher ground clearance (8.7-inches), and comes standard with Subaru's Symmetrical all-wheel-drive system for all-weather performance. Outback also offers X-Mode for additional off-pavement excursions.

Outback sales are up because the new 2022 Outback Wilderness has been a big hit with outdoor enthusiasts who want to get further away from civilization. Wilderness trim has a raised suspension (9.4-inches of ground clearance) and other off-pavement features for improved off-road performance. Wilderness is also attracting shoppers who are new to the Subaru brand.
What is the price of the 2022 Outback?
Subaru of America recently raised the price of the Outback $800 on April 26. The Base trim is now priced from $28,820, Premium ($31,020), Limited ($35,470), Touring ($39,370), Onyx Edition XT ($37,020), new for 2022, Outback Wilderness ($38,870), Limited XT ($39,870), and Touring XT ($41,820). Pricing includes $1,175 destination and delivery fees.
Should customers wait for the 2023 Outback?
For customers who can wait, the 2023 Outback midsize SUV gets new updates with a redesigned front fascia and exterior cladding, the latest version of EyeSight safety technology, and a new wide-angle mono camera on Touring trim levels. Subaru also updated the Outback's multimedia system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The refreshed 2023 Outback receives a new front fascia, a more prominent grille, redesigned LED headlights and fog lights, and a more rugged front bumper cover. Subaru says the wheel arch cladding has been updated to improve functionality. The Outback Onyx now comes standard with the 2.4-liter turbocharged engine. The 2023 Outback Wilderness does not get the new exterior styling upgrades and remains unchanged.
Before the refreshed 2023 Subaru Outback arrives this fall, 2022 models are selling as fast as Subaru retailers can get them, and it's the number one selling all-wheel-drive model in the lineup. It's a stand-out model for Subaru of America.
