The 2022 Subaru Legacy sedan is now ranked the best new midsize car you can buy under $30,000 by Consumer Reports. Check out why the Legacy scores best in its category.
What is the best midsize car under $30,000 you can buy this year? According to Consumer Reports (by subscription) recent tests and surveys, the 2022 Subaru Legacy is ranked number one overall for its fuel mileage and top safety scores, costing less than the average new car today.
Consumer Reports says Legacy scores number one as its top pick because the sedan offers good road-test performance, reliability, and owner satisfaction. The scores are based on CR's most recent tests and owner surveys. The Legacy scores number two midsize of nine models with a top score of 87, outscoring the top-selling Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.
Consumer Reports says, "The Legacy provides a super-comfortable ride that outshines some luxury cars. Handling is responsive but not sporty. This all-wheel-drive sedan is fitted with a choice of two four-cylinder engines: a 182-horsepower, 2.5-liter, and a 260-horsepower, turbocharged 2.4-liter.
Is there a downside to the Legacy? CR says, "The standard engine is adequate but makes an unpleasant roar when pushed."
CR also says, "It provides a decent 28 mpg overall. The turbo version delivers strong acceleration and is quieter. We like that the well-tuned CVT mimics the shift patterns of conventional automatics."
What is the 2022 Legacy fuel mileage?
The EPA says the Legacy XT and Sport trims with the 2.4-liter engine return EPA mileage figures estimated at 24 mpg city/32 mpg highway. The standard naturally aspirated 2.5-liter flat-4 engine gets an EPA estimated 27/35 mpg city/highway fuel economy.
What is the price of the 2022 Subaru Legacy?
Even with the recent price increase, Legacy is affordable. The 2022 Legacy sedan comes in six trim levels. The 2022 midsize sedan starts at $24,490 for the base trim, Premium ($26,740), Sport ($30,285), Limited ($31,440), Limited XT ($35,990), and Touring XT ($37,690). Destination and delivery fees are included in the pricing above ($995).
