Brandon bought a 2019 Subaru WRX STI, and then disaster struck twice.
Brandon had heard that the Subaru WRX STI was expensive to maintain, so he decided to buy a WRX instead. After owning two Honda Civic Si's, he was ready to upgrade to the WRX.
A friend told him he should look at the higher-performance WRX STI instead of the tamer WRX. Brandon took him up on the suggestion and decided to take one out for a test drive. He was immediately impressed by the STI's powerful turbocharged engine, precise handling, and iconic wing. He fell in love with the sports car and purchased a 2019 STI.
However, Brandon had terrible luck with his new 2019 STI. He had two disasters occur only a short time after he bought it.
Here is Brandon's impressive story.
"Ever since I started working in a tire shop through my college years, one car has been at the top of my list to own: a WRX. Learning about Subaru's history in Motorsports, what it stood for as a brand, and how it is deeply rooted in the car community led me to want to own one."
"After owning two Civic Si's and learning how to drive and modify cars myself, I found myself in a position to upgrade."
"While looking for a WRX Limited, my friend suggested I look at an STi. I wasn't originally sold on the idea because it was more expensive to maintain, but after test-driving it, there was no looking back."
"I purchased my 2019 WRX STI Limited in January 2022. Although I bought it used, Planet Subaru of Hanover, MA, had given it a full refresh before I drove it off the lot. The car lived up to its original goal of being the fastest and most powerful street-legal Subaru available for the public to purchase."
"I began building my car to fulfill my childhood dream, taking inspiration from Fast and Furious, Initial D, and Need for Speed. Unfortunately, in May '23, disaster struck when my engine failed."
"I was without the car for two months while I gathered parts and sent it off to a local Subie shop to be rebuilt. After those two months, the car returned stronger, more durable, and more reliable than when I got it."
Disaster stuck again.
"I was so excited to have it just in time for my annual vacation trip to Cape Cod. Disaster struck again in Nov. '23 when I was hit by a tow truck on my right front side, taking out two wheels and a strut. But every setback is a setup for a comeback, right?"
"Again, I spent time sourcing parts to improve on my idea until the car was back up about a month later. Now, a year later, Nov '24, the car is almost where I want it to be regarding looks and performance."
He could have walked away.
Brandon's determination to restore his STI is a testament to his love for the car and a source of inspiration for others.
This story proves that when you love a car, you'll stick with it even if it fails you. The engine failure could have given Brandon a lousy attitude toward his STI, but he didn't let it deter him.
After his Subaru STI was hit by a tow truck, he could have walked away thinking he should get rid of the STI for sure now. But he was determined to keep the performance car because it was his passion.
He didn't give up on his dream.
Brandon says, "It's given me about 70,000 miles of car shows, snowboarding trips, and work commutes. I hope to continuously improve my mechanical skills while building something I've always wanted to."
By the looks of Brandon's STI, he's done a great job bringing it back to life when it could have ended up in the junkyard and scrapped for parts.

I have a 2021 STI. It's got 48,657 miles. At least it brand new and the lease is about up in January. The residual is about 27,000. I'm going to purchase it. I love this car and I had a grand tour of Canada with an awesome road trip I took a couple years back. Drove through the Canadian Rockies and through Alberta and British Columbia. About 2300 mi total. What a fantastic road car. The car's been pretty flawless and I'm on my second set of tires. I'm going to change out the front brakes soon. They are expensive but well worth it on this car. My first WRX was a 2020, I was able to sell it for more than what the residual was and ended up getting the 2021 STI. That's a great thing about these cars is they hold the value pretty well. I'm going to keep it stock and I have confidence that it will be reliable throughout the time of my ownership.

Always before buying any wrx sti or non beside to check carfax, see if it’s modded before (walk away if it is), look for oil change/maintenance schedule you wanna see every 3k for oil changes, don’t beat the crap out of these cars.

I have a 2018 wrx sti, purchased it used in 2023, I have owned 8 other subarus in my driving life and I still have my original 2000 Forester, that we engine swapped in 2014. I did so because my husband unexpectedly passed away at age 41, we had always had talks about, when I die live your life, I would want you to move on types of topics. He had said and I want my kids to be diven around in an STi. He had left some money and one day we were driving past a dealer ship and one was sitting there that hadn't been before. I immediately pulled in, took a NEW wrx for a test drive and then the STi. SOLD. I bought the car that day. It has been my grief project and helped me process alot emotions and feelings about his death over the past year and a half. I can go 100 everyday if I want to and driving it makes me feel good. The boys get that they are being chauffeured around in an STi driven, by their mom and that's exactly what Dad wanted for us.

I bought a 2018 WRX August of 2023. It was ruined and I didn't know what that meant. The dealership sold me a warranty that doesn't cover the car because of performance parts.
My first problem is that I accidentally put regular gas in. Only once. Then I had to replace a couple things. A year later October of 2024 it starts sounding like it needs oil. They thought lifters. They took apart the engine and it was the piston skirts. They were worn. The previous owner beat the hell out of this car. So I haven't had my car since 10/17. I'm replacing the clutch while we have it apart. I have to fix the car because I still owe a lot of money on it. Sad for me. I've always had 6spd Maximas. I have an 05 in my driveway I wish was running. Bad mechanic different story!

This prob won't give you much comfort since the events are in the past, but always always have a pre purchase inspection performed on any and all used cars you buy. This goes double for performance cars. Make sure the inspection includes a compression test, which gives you an overview of your engine's health.

I own a 2017 wrx sti and like this owner i have had an engine failure after 5000 miles and now multiple sensors on the new engine. The car started as a limited STI and is now fully built and I've become treasurer of the Madison Subaru Club here in Wisconsin. I never gave up on my dream car and have loved the car since I was stationed in Japan in the Marines and saw my first subie. When retiring from the military I got my car and ther rest was a testament to how much these cars mean to our core demographic.

Many sharing stories of their Subaru engine failures .. engine do not just fails .. many causes engine fails .. just breakdown into 2 basic failures .. mechanical and people driving styles.
Many times engine fails can be the combination of both.

I have a 2011 WRX 4-door... nothing aftermarket. Recently, almost home, the engine starts to smoke and barely moves the car. Come to find out, had to replace the head gasket, along with all the fun stuff when you pull the engine out - timing belt, water pump, oil pan.
When I got it back, the mechanic says i shouldn't run the car hard "they aren't meant to be driven hard." Hmm, thought the WRX line was built JUST for that. (Btw, I love the base over the STi because you can tune it and it'll still be cheaper, but a lot faster)
Anyway, after I leave, I heard a weird noise coming from the engine, every time I engaged the clutch. I took it back and he says he didn't hear anything, so I took it as the breaking in period of the new clutch.
Still, all this work - $6K... not fun. (But cheaper than most repairs)
If anyone thinks I should worry, let me know. 140K miles for a 2011.

I have owned an 09 wrx for the past 8 years and it just keeps getting better. Unfortunately, I bought an 04 s60 to drive during the winter and that vehicle has cost me so much I may as well have gotten another wrx. That said I have spent 12k on the wrx and I plan on never selling. I do have to upgrade though and I plan on a down pipe, tune and whatever else tuner recommends.
