The 2022 Subaru WRX is all-new, and sales should be up over last year. But sales have dropped significantly. The WRX made a rebound the previous month, but will it continue?
When Subaru announced the next-generation 2022 WRX performance sedan, it was met with mixed reactions of some excitement and even more disappointment. The SUV-like fender flares, only a three-horsepower gain, and no hatchback body style were just a few of the criticisms.
Sales of the all-new 2022 WRX have been down since its U.S. launch when sales should be up. When any new model makes its dealer debut, sales usually go up with the new model. One of the big reasons the numbers look so dismal is Subaru dropped the WRX STI and included those sales with the WRX.

Subaru of America (SOA) reports in July, the next-generation WRX saw its first uptick in sales. SOA says they delivered 2,530 2022 WRX performance sedans to U.S. customers compared with 2,305 in July 2021. An increase of 9.8 percent isn't much, but the 2022 WRX has been down since its dealer launch.
Subaru of America has only sold 8,742 WRX sports cars through seven months of 2022, down 47.3 percent from the 16,577 sold through the first seven months of 2021.
The global microchip shortages, supply chain issues, and the recent Subaru plant shutdowns are some of the reasons for slow sales. Performance fans can order a new 2022 WRX from retailers to their specs and have it shipped from the factory. But it's still not happening in a significant way.
What is the price of the 2022 Subaru WRX?
The 2022 WRX 6-speed manual trim level starts at $30,600. The WRX with Subaru Performance Transmission (SPT) is $32,450, WRX Premium 6-speed manual is $33,100, WRX Premium SPT is $35,150, WRX Limited 6-speed manual is $37,490, WRX Limited SPT is $39,740, and WRX GT is $43,390. Pricing includes destination and delivery fees ($995).
Will Subaru make changes to the 2023 WRX?
Subaru Corporation will make minor changes to the 2023 WRX, and there's no reason to wait. The 2023 WRX won't arrive until the fall or winter of 2022, and it will likely get a price increase.
The next-generation 2022 Subaru WRX sales are down 47.3 percent year-to-date, the most of any Subaru model through the first seven months of 2022. One big reason is that Subaru dropped the WRX STI and included those sales with the WRX.
