Which car brands and models are the lowest cost-to-own? Check out the Vincentric 2023 Best Value In America Award winners and see why Subaru gets shut out for the second consecutive year.
The Vincentric 2023 Best Value In America Awards were announced, and Subaru was shut out again in 2023. Last year, Subaru also received no awards; in 2021, the brand had one winner, the Outback midsize SUV. Check out the winners here and why Subaru received no recognition for the second consecutive year.
Every year, Vincentric measures the lowest cost-of-ownership among car brands and segments to determine its Best Value In America Awards. Last year, Subaru was shut out, and the Japanese automaker had received no awards since 2021 when the Subaru Outback was the best midsize SUV. This year, the Subaru brand received no recognition again and earned no segment awards. Check out the winners below.
Vincentric measures the lowest cost of ownership using eight different cost factors: depreciation, fees, taxes, financing, fuel, maintenance, insurance, opportunity cost, and repairs. A statistical model identified winners by measuring which vehicles had lower than expected ownership costs given their market segment and price.
The 2023 Crosstrek subcompact SUV, 2023 Outback midsize SUV, 2023 Subaru Forester compact SUV, and 2023 Ascent 3-Row SUV do not rank highest in their category. The Chevrolet Bolt takes the top subcompact spot, Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid wins the compact SUV, Kia Sorento Plug-In Hybrid is the midsize SUV winner.
Ford wins the best passenger car, SUV, and Truck brand, Volvo is the luxury car brand winner, Tesla is the best luxury SUV brand, and Dodge wins the SUV and Van brand award.
Why does Subaru get shut out again?
Many electric and Hybrid models are winning the Vincentric Best Value In America Awards this year. Subaru only has one Plug-In Hybrid, the 2023 Crosstrek Plug-In Hybrid, and it's being discontinued after this year.
Subaru has new hybrid models on the drawing board, but they will not be available for U.S. customers until 2025-2027. See the complete report here.
What do other awards say about the Subaru brand?
According to Kelley Blue Book's 2022 5-Year Cost to Own Awards, the 2022 Forester, 2022 Subaru Outback, and 2022 Subaru Ascent scored among the eleven best new SUVs. Forester was the best compact SUV, Outback won the Two-Row SUV segment, and Ascent took home the Three-Row SUV trophy. The 2022 Subaru BRZ took home the best Sports Car award.
In 2020, Subaru was the best passenger car brand in Vencentric's best value awards and won the compact car, compact hatchback (Impreza), and best midsize SUV (Outback) awards. In last year's Vincentric Best Fleet Value In America 2021 awards, the 2021 Subaru Outback, Crosstrek, and Legacy scored the lowest cost-to-own awards.
Why is Subaru shut out of the 2023 Vincentric Best Value Awards for the second consecutive year? Subaru all-wheel-drive vehicles are the most fuel-efficient gas-powered models, have low maintenance costs, and are among the least expensive to insure.
Subaru is coming with new Hybrid trim levels, but they won't arrive for U.S. customers until 2025. Subaru needs new Hybrid SUVs to compete with Kia and Ford, and the 2023 Subaru Solterra EV is too new to be considered because November 2022 was its first month of sales.
Would you be more likely to buy a Subaru SUV if they offered the Outback, Forester, and Ascent in Hybrid trim levels? Let us know in the comment section below.

I would buy a Forester only if they make the floor flat in the rear, no hump (transmission tunnel)
My husband and I are thinking
My husband and I are thinking about buying a Subaru within the next 6 months. I have been reading your articles and am very impressed with the car. As far as buying an EV car the answer is a resounding no.
