In the UK, you will be safer than other motorists if you drive a 2016 Subaru Outback fitted with the Lineartronic automatic. What sets it apart?
If you drive the 2016 Subaru Outback with a Lineartronic (CVT) transmission in the UK, you will be safer than other motorists on the road. That’s because those Subaru Outback models come standard with the brand’s preventative safety system called EyeSight. It’s not an option on the popular SUV-alternative wagon like it is in the U.S. What makes Outback CVT with EyeSight safer?
All Subaru Outback models fitted with the CVT gets EyeSight safety technology and it’s significantly safer than those models without it. Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI), who manufactures Subaru vehicles, developed the safety system back in 1989 and has been improving it every new generation since.
How does EyeSight make Outback safer?
EyeSight acts as a “second pair of eyes” for Outback drivers. It’s easy to get distracted while driving and this is where EyeSight makes a big difference. The system uses stereo color camera technology to monitor the road and traffic ahead for potential hazards. EyeSight’s two color cameras are located on either side of the rear view mirror to detect the presence of vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and other hazards up to 110 meters in front of the vehicle. The Outback equipped with EyeSight can auto-brake the vehicle if it senses an impending collision.
EyeSight features six technologies to maximize safety
There’s six technologies that FHI uses to make the system the best preventative system on the market. They are: Pre-collision Braking, Pre-collision Throttle Management, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure & Sway Warning, Pre-collision Steering Assist and Lead Vehicle Start Alert. All are designed to prevent accidents.
The system significantly reduces accidents
In the real world, recently released data from a survey of traffic accidents involving Subaru vehicles in Japan, revealed a 61 percent reduction in crashes for vehicles equipped with Subaru’s advanced EyeSight collision avoidance technology. The data comes from traffic accident data involving the brand’s vehicles from 2010 to 2014. Data shows Subaru vehicles equipped with EyeSight had 84 percent fewer rear-end collisions than those without. EyeSight also resulted in 62 percent fewer vehicle-to-vehicle collisions and a 49 percent reduction in vehicle-to-pedestrian crashes. The data was collected from over 10,000 vehicle accidents in Japan. The results speak volumes about the system’s effectiveness.
In independent safety testing, EyeSight is a major contributor to the 2016 Subaru Outback’s maximum five-star Euro NCAP crash test safety rating. The technology has also resulted in a Top Safety Pick+ rating in the U.S. from Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The preventative safety system also received the top Advanced Safety Vehicle-Plus rating from Japan’s NCAP safety test.
