The 2022 Subaru Forester arrives next month, but it's missing a key feature that customers want. Why do seven mainstream car brands offer a head-up display but not Subaru?

Subaru is bringing more safety features on the refreshed 2022 Forester, but they don't offer an Active Driving Display. The new compact SUV offers customers standard safety-first features like driver assist, surround-view cameras with blind-spot detection, and visual indicators in the side mirrors. Still, it doesn't offer you a head-up display (HUD) system that projects information onto the windshield.

HUD would give the top-selling Forester another level of safety for customers allowing you to keep your eyes on the road. A new report from Kelly Blue Book explains a head-up display and reveals seven mainstream automakers offer the feature.

Why is a head-up display a critical feature?

A head-up display is more than a luxury feature. It's a needed safety feature because it allows the driver to keep both eyes on the road by directly putting essential information in the driver's sight. Many automakers like Mazda and Hyundai are now offering a head-up display on lower trims, and you don't have to buy a luxury car to get it. It's the one feature Subaru should offer on all its SUVs.

Which mainstream automakers offer a HUD?

MINI offers a HUD in all of its models. Among Mazda models, only the MX-5 Miata does not provide a HUD. Toyota offers it in nine models. Chevrolet, GMC, and Hyundai offer a HUD in at least four models each, while Kia has three models with the feature. Subaru does not offer any models with a head-up display.

2022 Forester adds new safety features

The 2022 Forester Touring does add gesture control capability, allowing the driver to raise and lower the automatic climate control system's set temperature through hand gestures. This also helps the driver keep their eyes on the road.

The 2022 Forester EyeSight includes new automatic emergency steering that works in conjunction with the Pre-Collision Braking System to assist with steering control to help avoid a collision at speeds less than 50 mph.

Subaru adds the new gesture climate control on one trim level, the 2022 Forester Touring for another level of safety. Subaru should give their customers another safety feature like a head-up display to be the overall safety leader.
