Subaru is recalling 2020 Outback and Legacy vehicles because a brake pedal mounting bracket may have an insufficiently tightened or missing bolt.
Subaru of America is hit with another recall, this one for the all-new 2020 Subaru Outback and Legacy models. The Camden, N.J. automaker is recalling certain 2020 Outback and Legacy models made at the Subaru plant in Lafayette, Indiana due to a brake pedal mounting bracket may have a missing or insufficiently tightened bolt. A total of 3,450 U.S. vehicles will be affected by this recall.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says a missing or loose bolt may cause the brake pedal mounting are to deform over time which can reduce braking performance and increase the risk of a crash. The 2020 Subaru Outback models were produced from July 30, 2019, through August 29, 2019, and 2020 Legacy models were manufactured from July 31, 2019, through August 26, 2019.
It is uncertain how many of the 2020 Outback and Legacy models have been sold to customers because these all-new models are just arriving at dealer showrooms now. Torque News heard from one of our readers that a dealer was not allowing them to purchase a new 2020 Subaru Outback because of the potential brake pedal mounting bracket issue. Dealers may have known about the problem for a number of weeks now.
Subaru says the brake issue was caused by a defective bolt feeder that may have improperly installed a bolt potentially resulting in a cross-threading of the nut or missing hardware. Subaru technicians will need to inspect the suspect bolts in all potentially affected vehicles and replace the brake pedal assembly if necessary.
If you have purchased a new Outback SUV or Legacy sedan, Subaru will notify all potentially affected owners by first class mail on or around October 1, 2019. Owners with a valid email address on file with Subaru will also be notified by email.
Subaru dealers will inspect the 2020 Subaru Outback and 2020 Legacy brake pedal mounting bracket hardware and replace the hardware or brake pedal assembly, as necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on October 1, 2019. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Subaru's number for this recall is WUL-97.
