The 2022 Subaru Outback makes the final cut for the Women's World Car of the Year award. Here's why it just made the prestigious list.

What makes the 2022 Subaru Outback a good contender for Women's World Car of the Year? There are three reasons why it could be the best all-around vehicle for women.

The Women's World Car of the Year jurors just chose the best cars of 2022 in six categories. The jury is the only one in the world made up solely of women experts in motoring. The jury currently includes 55 journalists from 40 countries with an audience of more than 500 million people.

In the SUV category (over 4.6 meters), the 2022 Subaru Outback makes the cut in the first phase for Women's World Car of the year. Why does it matter that Subaru and the automotive world pay attention to the voting? A report from Cars.com says women buy 62 percent of all new cars sold in the U.S. and now influence more than 85 percent of all car purchases.

The report says that women look for a vehicle that fits their lifestyle, and it's not about the image. "They need something for hauling their big dogs or something for traveling safely on snow-packed roads or something that'll make the carpool lane a little less stressful," says Cars.com.

Women embrace their practical side and focus on safety, reliability, and comfort when car shopping. According to J.D. Power research, they're also less brand loyal than male car shoppers.

Peter Tenn, a planning manager for Subaru of America, speaking at the launch of the new Subaru Outback, said the number one occupation buying the Outback is educators followed by healthcare workers (a lot of buyers are nurses) the third group is people in technology fields. These buyers are all informed consumers who come to the Subaru dealer "armed with a whole lot of technical information," Tenn says.

All-wheel-drive safety

Many nurses and health care workers are buying the Outback for its all-wheel-drive, all-weather capabilities. They need to get to work in all kinds of extreme conditions, and they can't be worried about getting stuck in the snow on the way to the hospital. Subaru Outback comes standard with Subaru's Symmetrical all-wheel-drive that offers peace of mind.

According to Subaru, the average age of Outback buyers is 45, and the gender split is 52 percent male, 48 percent female. Seventy-eight percent are married, and the average household income is $75,000 to $99,000. These customers are looking for a vehicle that will not only get them to work in all conditions but are also concerned with safety.

Top safety scores

Tenn says Outback customers are all looking for a vehicle with top safety ratings, and this is a common theme across demographic and psychographic lines. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2022 Subaru Outback scores a top superior safety rating in its overall evaluation.

Reliability

The Outback just scored number one in the Consumer Reports (by subscription) reliability study. The Outback scored number one in the midsize SUV category with a score of 85/100, the highest of all midsize SUVs, and the third-best model ranking in the Subaru lineup.

Comfort

In another Consumer Reports (by subscription) study, they picked the seven-best midsize 2-Row, and 3-Row SUVs that are the roomiest, most comfortable, and have ample cargo room to fit your family along with your groceries, sports equipment, and luggage. CR ranked the 2022 Subaru Outback number one in the non-luxury 2-Row Midsize SUV category.

The 2022 Subaru Outback is among the category winners announced this week, and now voting begins for the top winner for Women's World Car of the Year. The winner will be announced in the days before March 8th (International Women Drivers' Day). The Outback faces stiff competition, and it's already a top pick among female SUV buyers.
