What are the best SUVs to take off-road? The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek gets the nod along with the all-new 2022 Outback Wilderness. Where is the new Forester Wilderness?

Even before the 2023 Crosstrek Wilderness arrives, the 2022 Crosstrek gets picked as one of the best new SUVs to take off-road. It’s not a surprise that the hot, new 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness also gets a top spot on AutoGuide’s list of the 10-best off-road SUVs on the market today.

All the SUVs picked as best are rugged enough to handle more than a Sunday afternoon drive in the country. The Crosstrek and Outback Wilderness join an impressive list of SUVs with a “go-anywhere” attitude.

AutoGuide’s Top 10 list of the best off-road SUVs listed in alphabetical order include the Ford Bronco, Ford Bronco Sport, GMC Yukon AT4, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Jeep Wrangler, Land Rover Defender, Lexus LX, Subaru Crosstrek, Subaru Outback Wilderness, and Toyota 4Runner.

All Subaru SUVs are known for their standard Symmetrical all-wheel-drive, 8.7-inches of ground clearance, and X-Mode all-terrain system for improved off-road performance. The new Wilderness sub-brand trim includes more to get you further away from civilization.

The Outback was Subaru’s first SUV to get the extra rugged Wilderness trim level with additional ground clearance (9.5-inches), all-terrain tires, advanced dual function X-Mode, a standard front skid plate, and an upgraded suspension. Check out the complete Wilderness upgrades here.

Outdoor enthusiasts can add additional accessory parts from Subaru retailers, including aluminum or steel skid plates for the engine, transmission, and fuel tank. A rear differential protector is also available.

When will Crosstrek get the Wilderness upgrades?

The next-generation 2023 Subaru Crosstrek will launch with the all-new Wilderness trim. Subaru of America will be the first to get the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness, and the more rugged off-pavement model will arrive in the summer of 2023.

The all-new 2022 Forester Wilderness

Like Outback and the new 2022 Forester Wilderness trim levels, the all-new Crosstrek Wilderness will come with an advanced dual function X-Mode, elevated 9.2-inch ground clearance like Forester, standard front and rear skid plates, and an upgraded off-road suspension.

The Crosstrek Wilderness will wear 17-inch Yokohama Geolandar all-terrain tires and come with a full-size spare tire. The new Crosstrek will also feature a modified Lineartronic CVT automatic (Continuously Variable Transmission) and an upgraded rear differential.
