What used Subaru model does Consumer Reports recommend to their friends and families? See why CR picked the Subaru Legacy among the best used car picks for $15,000 to $20,000.
What is the best used Subaru model you can buy now? According to a new report from Consumer Reports (by subscription), the 2016-2017 Subaru Legacy sedan model year is one of the best picks for used car shoppers for $15,000 to $20,000.
Consumer Reports picked the 2016-2017 Subaru Legacy because it demonstrated multiple years of much-better-than-average reliability, performed well in its road tests, has standard safety tech, and gets the top crash scores from the IIHS. They also relied heavily on years of test data and what owners of the Legacy said in survey responses.
The five best Midsize Sedans picked by CR
In the midsize car category, the 2016-2017 Subaru Legacy is a top pick, along with the 2015 Honda Accord, 2017 Mazda 6, 2016 Toyota Avalon, and 2016 Toyota Camry.
What does CR say about the 2016-2017 Legacy Sedan?
"This generation Legacy is more refined than its predecessors, which made a good sedan even better. Subaru improved the interior quality, added a new infotainment system, and elevated the ride quality to near-luxury levels. The 2.5-liter four-cylinder returned 26 mpg overall, impressive given the standard all-wheel drive; a smooth 3.6-liter six is also available. Both engines are mated to a CVT. Handling is responsive."
"The spacious and quiet cabin provides plenty of room for the driver, along with a large rear seat and simple controls. Large windows and thin roof pillars supply excellent outward visibility, helped by a standard backup camera and optional blind spot warning. Crash-test results are top-notch, and both front collision warning and the automatic emergency braking are available.”
What is the Legacy fuel mileage?
In Consumer Reports owner surveys, they get a reported overall 27 mpg. The EPA says the 2016 Legacy gets 26/35 city/highway mpg and 29 combined mpg with the 2.5-liter engine and automatic transmission. The EPA fuel mileage estimates for the 2017 Legacy with the 2.5-liter engine are 25/34 city/highway and 29 combined mpg.
The Legacy has excellent crash test scores.
The 2016 and 2017 Subaru Legacy model years earned the highest Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The Legacy also received a five-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Our take on the Legacy
There are more reasons to choose the Subaru Legacy. Sedans get better fuel mileage than SUVs, and the 2016 and 2017 Subaru Legacy come standard with all-wheel-drive for superior winter driving performance.
Winter is coming, and the Legacy is better than the other sedans recommended by CR. Whatever trim level you choose, the Legacy midsize sedan comes with Subaru's Symmetrical all-wheel-drive system. You don't pay extra for the all-weather system, which delivers extreme weather capability in snow and ice.
With the new model shortages, if you can't find a new vehicle, midsize sedan shoppers have several good used car choices, and the 2016 and 2017 Subaru Legacy sedan is a top pick by Consumer Reports. The Legacy offers fuel-efficiency, all-wheel-drive for excellent winter driving performance; it gets the highest safety scores and a 5/5 in reliability.
