What are the best compact cars for shoppers this fall and winter? Consumer Reports (by subscription) ranks all new models and says you should avoid buying the 2022 Toyota Corolla Hatchback and buy the 2022 Subaru Impreza instead. Why does CR say the Impreza sedan and hatchback are the best of twelve new compact cars? It gets the highest safety, reliability, road test performance, and owner satisfaction scores.
Why is the 2022 Subaru Impreza your best pick?
Consumer Reports says the 2022 Impreza has a ”Comfortable ride, relatively roomy interior, easy-to-use controls, standard all-wheel-drive without a fuel-economy penalty, and an available hatchback body style.”
How could the Impreza be better?
CR says the biggest knock against the Impreza is the 2.0-liter engine can get noisy, and the driver’s seat is short on lumbar support.
Why should you avoid the 2022 Toyota Corolla Hatchback?
The ride is stiff, and the car is loud, the latter primarily because of the raspy 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that usually seems like it’s working too hard, and the rear seat is super-cramped. CR scores the Toyota Corolla number eleven of twelve compact cars.
The 2022 Subaru Impreza has an overall score of 81, while the Toyota Corolla has a score of just 51 and scores low in predicted reliability and owner satisfaction.

That Corolla will still be going after that Subaru is long dead, crushed and made into Coke cans.

Stopped taking this article seriously when it mentions a Corolla Hatchback with a 2.4 L engine. Writer can't get facts straight. Try again, Denis.
This is a bit shocking as the
This is a bit shocking as the Impreza hasn't been refreshed in years (2017 was it?). Speaks well that a model designed over 5 years ago is still competing well against the bigger manufacturers.
Of course you couldn't buy an Impreza if you wanted to given the massive shortages in Subaru manufacturing. (Yes all manufacturers are struggling but few as bad as Subaru) Somebody at Subaru should be volunteered to spend more time with their family for such a colossal screw up.
