Subaru has announced pricing, specs and new upgrades for the 2020 Impreza compact. The EPA says MPG drops in two sedan models.

Subaru of America has announced pricing and new specs and upgrades on the refreshed 2020 Impreza sedan and 5-door hatchback models. This is the fourth year in the Impreza’s life cycle after the compact car’s complete redesign in 2017. When we checked 2019 Impreza vs 2020 EPA fuel mileage estimates there is a 1 MPG drop in fuel mileage in two new 2020 Impreza models.

Subaru of America says the 2020 Impreza achieves up to 36 highway miles per gallon and more than 450 miles on a full tank, “making it one of the most fuel-efficient all-wheel-drive vehicles sold in the U.S.” which is true. But checking EPA's estimates reveals two models, the 2020 Impreza 4-Door sedan, 2.0-liter with a 5-speed manual transmission and the same model with the CVT automatic, both have dropped in fuel-mileage according to the EPA from 2019 models.

When we compared the two, the EPA says the 2020 Impreza gets 31 mpg combined city/highway and 28/36 city/highway mpg in the non-Sport CVT trims. But its fuel-economy numbers have dropped from the 2019 Impreza, which got an EPA estimated 32 mpg combined city/highway and 28/38 city/highway mpg in the sedan with the CVT automatic.

The 2020 Impreza 4-Door sedan with the 5-speed manual gearbox has the same 1 MPG drop in fuel mileage. 2019 Impreza models got an EPA estimated 27 combined city/highway and 24/32 city/ highway mpg. 2020 Impreza 4-Door sedan gets 26 combined city/highway, and 23/31 city/highway mpg in the non-Sport CVT trims.

All other 2020 Subaru Impreza trim levels, the Sport 4-Door sedan, and Sport 5-Door hatchback models all have the same EPA fuel mileage numbers as the 2019 models. All 2020 Impreza models come powered by the same 2.0-liter four-cylinder Boxer engine that produces 152 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque. So we aren’t sure why there would be a difference in fuel mileage.

Could there be different gear ratios? Different programming of the engine's computer? Maybe different aerodynamics because of some change in trim pieces on certain models? Maybe a different supplier of components that are supposed to be the same? I hope the EPA tests are carefully controlled for temperature, humidity, etc.
