Which is the best new sedan you can buy now? I'll look at the 2024 Subaru Legacy, 2024 Toyota Camry, and 2024 Honda Accord, comparing the purchase price and the vehicle's projected lifespan.

There are many choices for sedan shoppers looking to purchase a new model now, but which new vehicles are the best? I cover the best new models yearly, and there's updated data. A recent report from iSeeCars says the 2024 Toyota Camry, 2024 Honda Accord, and 2024 Subaru Legacy are the top three picks for shoppers now. The three models combine a low purchase price with a long lifespan.

The three are the best picks now, according to iSeeCars data, making them the value leaders for new sedan buyers. I will explain why the Subaru Legacy is the surprise model compared to the top-selling Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.

iSeeCars says automotive value can be defined in several ways, but buyers seeking the longest vehicle lifespan at the lowest price should keep reading.

On average, a new sedan costs $2,058 for every 10,000 miles of lifespan it provides, but the Accord, Camry, and Legacy cost between 1,400 and $1,700 per 10,000 miles of lifespan. The models are the top-performing models in the study.

How did iSeeCars evaluate the best new sedans?

iSeeCars analyzed the prices of over 8.3 million new cars sold in September - December 2023 and the odometer readings of over 181 million used cars from its Longest Lasting Cars Study to determine the rankings for the best new sedans for the money.

"Midsize sedans aren't as popular as they used to be, but they still provide a strong combination of passenger comfort and useful cargo space," said Brauer. "And the models on this list also deliver excellent value."

Best midsize cars for the money

I will cover the top three midsize models that offer better-than-average costs for each 10,000 miles of life—the Honda Accord scores best, followed by the Toyota Camry and Subaru Legacy.

1. Honda Accord

  • Price per 10,000 miles - $1,432
  • Average New Car Price - $30,321
  • Average Lifespan in Miles - 211,772

2. Toyota Camry

  • Price per 10,000 miles - $1,585
  • Average New Car Price - $31,960
  • Average Lifespan in Miles - 201,644

3. Subaru Legacy

  • Price per 10,000 miles - $1,735
  • Average New Car Price - $32,889
  • Average Lifespan in Miles - 189,603

What is the pricing for all 2024 Legacy trims?

For the 2024 model year, the Legacy sedan is available in five trim levels. The base is priced at $25,985, Premium ($28,285), Sport ($35,585), Limited ($33,035), and Touring XT ($39,285). Destination and delivery fees are included in the price above ($1,090).

My Take

I cover the 2024 Subaru Legacy extensively, and it's the surprise model on the list. The Legacy can't compete with the Accord and Camry in sales volume, but the Legacy is one of the best sedans you can buy, combining a low purchase price with a long lifespan.

It has extra value when you factor in the Legacy, which comes with Subaru's Symmetrical all-wheel-drive system offering all-weather and severe weather performance. There's also the Legacy's safety score. The 2024 Legacy earned the highest Top Safety Pick+ score from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, making it one of the safest sedans you can buy.

What's next for the Subaru Legacy?

I have written before that the Legacy could use a hybrid trim level that would boost excitement for the sedan. The sedan gets a complete remodel for the 2025 model year. It's about one year away. Stay tuned.
