The Hot Subaru Crosstrek Slips To Second Behind The Comeback Model Of The Year

Subaru of America announced new Crosstrek sales, which are still hot, but the subcompact SUV is not number one. See why the red-hot subcompact SUV has lost its top-selling status to a comeback model.

The 2023 Subaru Crosstrek subcompact SUV was red hot to start the year, but the compact SUV has lost its number one selling status in Subaru of America's (SOA) all-wheel-drive lineup. SOA reported that May sales are up for ten consecutive months, but the Crosstrek is no longer the top-selling all-wheel-drive model.

The Crosstrek loses its first-place status.

The hot Crosstrek subcompact is up in May sales, but not as good as the comeback model, Outback midsize SUV. As a result, Crosstrek was the third-best performer last month by volume, up 5.7 percent, with 10,456 sales in May compared with 9,894 in May 2023. The Crosstrek is now up 5.0 percent for the year's first five months.

Outback is on top as the top performer in May and the year.

Crosstrek dropped to second overall in the lineup behind Outback year to date, with 62,328 models sold. However, the Outback now leads all models with 65,178 midsize SUVs delivered to customers in 2023.

The newly upgraded 2023 Subaru Outback midsize SUV increased 16.5 percent in May, with 17,146 models sold compared with 14,724 in May 2022. The Outback is the top performer in the lineup. Outback is now up 1.5 percent in the first five months of 2023.

Look for Crosstrek to bounce back.

The Subaru Crosstrek won't be down for long. Customers are already purchasing the all-new next-generation 2024 Crosstrek that's arriving now at U.S. retailers. Last month, the first new Crosstrek Sport and Limited trims rolled off the Subaru of Indiana Automotive assembly line, and the new 2024 Premium and Base trims are here from Japan.

Subaru is now producing the 2024 Crosstrek Sport, Crosstrek Limited, and Crosstrek Wilderness trim levels in the U.S. plant for the first time. Those trim levels will arrive this summer and fall.

We expect sales of the Crosstrek to continue the hot streak as the first next-generation models arrive this month. The remodeled 2024 Crosstrek gets significant upgrades from the second-generation models. The Sport and Limited trims are powered by the re-tuned, slightly more powerful 2.5-liter Boxer engine, producing 182 hp and 178 lb.-ft. of torque. Check out the complete model change guide here.

What is the price of the 2024 Crosstrek?

For 2024, the Crosstrek will be available in Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, and Wilderness trim levels and has a starting price of $26,290 (the same MSRP as the 2023 Base model equipped with the Lineartronic CVT automatic transmission).

The 2024 Crosstrek Premium has a starting price of $27,440, Sport ($30,290), and Limited ($32,190). Pricing includes destination and delivery fees ($1,225).

What is the price of the Crosstrek Wilderness?

The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness will be the most expensive Crosstrek trim level. The all-new Crosstrek Wilderness costs $33,290, including dealer destination and delivery fees ($1,295).

As Subaru of Indiana Automotive produces the first next-generation Crosstrek, the subcompact SUV will get red hot again. The Base and Premium trims are arriving now at U.S. retailers, and the all-new 2024 Crosstrek Sport and Limited come this summer and Crosstrek Wilderness this fall. Stay tuned.
