The 2023 Subaru Crosstrek gets another retained value award from the CBB. Here is what it means for small SUV shoppers.
Is the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek a good value for small SUV shoppers? According to Canadian Black Book (CBB), the Crosstrek won the best-retained value award again in the Subcompact SUV category. The hot Crosstrek wins the number one spot for the second consecutive year ahead of the number two Nissan Kicks and number three Honda HR-V.
The Crosstrek is Subaru's hot model and is now the best-selling new vehicle in Subaru of America's all-wheel-drive lineup. The Crosstrek nearly made the top ten most popular SUVs in America, finishing eleventh overall.
The Canadian Black Book Best Retained Value Awards pick the top vehicles that retain the highest percentage of their original MSRP after four years. The awards program analyzed the model year 2019 cars, trucks, and SUVs in fifteen categories.
"Our strategic planning always includes providing long-lasting value to our customers," said SCI chairman, president, and CEO Tomohiro Kubota. "Awards like these give us confidence that our goals are achieved.”

Forester gets a second place
In the Compact SUV category, the Subaru Forester finishes second behind the Toyota RAV4 and ahead of the Honda CR-V, which finished third. Subaru places third in the Overall Car Brand category behind Toyota and Dodge.
What does the award mean for small SUV shoppers?
Subaru says, "This is extremely valuable information for consumers, given that depreciation is the single largest vehicle ownership expense. The award demonstrates the long-term value of Subaru vehicles, a factor important to the decision-making process of purchasing a vehicle."
The CBB award for Subaru Crosstrek and Forester lets consumers know that the vehicles will retain their value better than other models. This can make the most significant difference when you trade your car after 3-5 years. You'll get more for your trade-in than other carmakers' vehicles.
A good example is the value of a two-or-three-year-old Subaru Crosstrek. A used Crosstrek costs more than a 2023 model year in today's used car environment. It's good for customers trading in a lightly used Crosstrek but not so good if you buy a used model.
What is the price of the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek?
All 2023 Subaru Crosstrek trim levels get a $600 price increase, including destination and delivery fees. The Crosstrek now comes in six trim levels for U.S. customers. The base trim is priced from $24,870, Premium ($26,020), Special Edition ($27,970), Sport ($29,220), Limited ($30,720), and Crosstrek Hybrid ($38,070). Prices include destination and delivery fees ($1,225).
What is the 2023 Crosstrek fuel mileage?
The CVT models achieve EPA-estimated fuel economy of 28/33 city/highway and 30 combined mpg. The 6-speed manual models are rated 22/29 city/highway and 25 combined mpg. The 2.5-liter Boxer engine achieves an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 27/34 city/highway and 29 combined mpg.
What Crosstrek trim level offers the best value?
The Crosstrek Premium trim is a good value for subcompact SUV shoppers. The Premium comes with a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter handle, fog lights, an all-weather package with heated front seats, Starlink safety and security, and an available 6-way power-adjustable driver's seat.
Which Crosstrek is best for outdoor enthusiasts?
Customers with active lifestyles will want the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek Sport trim level. Like all trims, the Sport comes with standard Subaru Symmetrical all-wheel-drive and 8.7 inches of ground clearance. But the Sport trim comes with Subaru's new dual-function X-Mode for additional off-road capability. The Sport also comes with a larger 2.5-liter engine.
The Sport's 2.5-liter engine produces 30 additional horsepower over the standard 2.0-liter engine and is a must for carrying extra gear up a mountain pass. The 2.5-liter also gets one mpg better highway fuel mileage.
The Crosstrek Sport also comes with StarTex water-repellent upholstery that's not available on any other trim level. Like the Premium trim, the Sport comes with a power driver's seat, heated seats and mirrors, keyless access, and push-button start.
Two more Crosstrek awards
The Crosstrek was also the winner of the J.D. Power 2022 Canada ALG Residual Value Award in its Subcompact Utility class and named Top Safety Pick (on models with EyeSight and specific headlights) by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
The new CBB and J.D. Power awards reveal the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek retains its value better than all other subcompact SUVs. The 2023 Subaru Forester is a close second for compact SUV shoppers. Both models are a good value for SUV shoppers this year.
