Here is how to turn your new Subaru Forester or Outback into a fully-functional camp mobile in under 5 minutes.
If you have extra time off this spring because of the coronavirus health crisis, check out two camper systems that will turn your new Subaru Forester or Outback into a full camp-mobile in just a few minutes. Thanks to Gear Junkie who alerted us to these cool products. One company is Egoe Nest from the Czech Republic, and Ququq has a location in Henderson, Nevada.
The Czech company Egoe Nest, is about to make its North American debut and offers a product called Nestbox. The all-in-one camper system can easily be moved in and out of the cargo area of your Forester and Outback all-wheel-drive vehicle. Currently, they offer the system for the Forester SUV, Outback wagon and oddly the Tribeca. We would imagine it will also fit in the Ascent family hauler but could be too large for the subcompact Crosstrek.
The Nestbox Camper is the smallest system and offers the mainframe kitchen set that houses the cooking stove, water source, and cooling bag. It also comes with a folding bed frame and mattress. The kitchen features a two-burner propane stove, a sink, water system, organizer drawers, and a 12-volt fridge. The entire camp system stows neatly into the cabinet box and easily folds and slides in and out of your Subaru vehicle.
For sleeping, the bed system consists of a three-panel design that folds out over the folded rear seats of the vehicle. The bed system stores neatly above the Nestbox for transport and it can easily be removed for day trips. The Nestbox Camper costs around $3,000. The company also offers accessory bags for the rear windows of your vehicle and matching pillows.
Ququq also offers a camper-in-a-box system for some vehicles but not specifically Subaru. The Ququq system is very similar to the Nextbox system, but it’s executed differently and fits vans, minivans, Land Rover Defender, Toyota Land Cruiser, and Mercedes G-Class. If you contact the company, they can assist you in which system might fit your Subaru Forester, Outback, or Ascent.
Both companies will be exhibiting their products at Overland Expo West July 24-26, 2020 at Ft. Tuthill County Park outside of Flagstaff, AZ. You can talk with representatives about their camper systems that will turn your new Subaru Forester or Outback into a full camp-mobile in less than 5 minutes.

One thing that is not
One thing that is not mentioned in this article is if you have the power lift gate you will drain the battery if you leave it open. I found out the hard way and was stuck on Toro Peak for several hours before I could get a jump. I have been in contact with Subaru and they are aware of the issue but currently there is no work around. I ended up buying a solar batter charger and a portable jump starter.
I have found a partial work
I have found a partial work-around for the battery drain. When the rear hatch is open you can trick the computer by taking the end of a bungee-cord and closing the latch. The computer will think the hatch is closed and at least turn off the dash and door approach lights. This should buy extended battery time. You have to close the hatch manually and then reopen in the usual manner to open the latch. This is a bit of a pain but it seems to work.
