Maybe you aren't ready to pull the trigger and buy a new all-electric vehicle or even a hybrid model yet. If having an all-wheel-drive vehicle is important to you, the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek and 2022 Forester are the number one and three most fuel-stingy non-hybrid small SUVs according to Consumer Reports latest extensive fuel-economy tests. It's still an excellent time to buy a gas-powered model because fuel efficiency is improved on small SUVs.
Having an SUV with all-wheel-drive usually means sacrificing fuel economy, but it's not valid with the Crosstrek and Forester. Subaru uses direct injection on its four-cylinder Boxer engines for efficiency, and the automaker also uses the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) automatic, contributing to better mileage.
Consumer Reports recently ranked all small SUVs and found the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek is number one with 29 combined mpg and 20/39 city/highway mpg in CR's testing. Consumer Reports tested the Subaru Crosstrek Premium trim level with the 2.0-liter engine, which comes standard with all-wheel-drive.
The Crosstrek is followed by the Toyota Corolla Cross with 28 combined mpg and 20/37 city/highway mpg. Next is the Honda HR-V LX with 28 combined mpg and 20/39 city/highway mpg.
The 2022 Subaru Forester, with standard all-wheel-drive, is the number three small SUV in fuel mileage with 28 combined mpg and 20/38 city/highway mpg. Consumer Reports tested the Subaru Forester Premium trim level.
The Honda CR-V EX is number four with 28/20/37. It is followed by the Kia Seltos S (28/20/35), Toyota RAV4 XLE (27/19/38), Mazda CX-30 Preferred (27/18/37), Mercedes-Benz GLA (27/17/40), Nissan Rogue Sport SV (26/19/34), and Hyundai Tucson SEL (26/18/35).
What is the 2023 Crosstrek 2.5-liter engine fuel mileage?
The 2023 Subaru Crosstrek with the new 2.5-liter Boxer engine comes with 30 more horsepower and gets an EPA estimated fuel mileage of 27/34 city/highway mpg and 29 combined mpg. The 2023 Crosstrek with the 2.0-liter four-cylinder Boxer engine gets an EPA estimated 28/33 mpg and 30 combined mpg.
