The Subaru Outback all-wheel-drive wagon proves its worth with the National Ski Patrol in winter and summer. How does it benefit outdoor enthusiasts?
Subaru created a niche with their all-wheel-drive Subaru Outback wagon over 40 years ago and it’s still working today. The Subaru Outback is synonymous with skiing and winter sports and has been the official vehicle of the National Ski Patrol (NSP) for over 20 years. The nonprofit organization headquartered in Lakewood, Colorado, serves the public and the snow-sports industry by providing education on emergency care and safety, and they drive the new Subaru Outback to work every day. The Outback and NSP is also about summer sports.
It’s a great partnership for Subaru showing the Outback’s Symmetrical all-wheel-drive abilities getting NSP patrollers and skiers safely to the ski slope. The NSP’s mission is to keep guests safe while they are enjoying snow sports. They also work to keep summer sports enthusiasts safe.

Subaru began its sponsorship of the United States Ski Team in 1976 and continued until 1995 when it switched to the larger NSP with over 27,000 patrol members. Subaru also sponsors the Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA), and the American Association of Snowboard Instructors (AASI).
The NSP-wrapped Subaru Outbacks are highly visible at events throughout the year from education and training sessions on Outdoor Emergency Care, Travel Mountain and Rescue or Avalanche Trainings and now branched out to road and mountain bike events in the summer.
Outback patrols in winter and summer
The National Ski Patrol isn’t just about winter sports. They also started to create safety messages for outdoor enthusiasts enjoying the mountains in the summer. Whether you are mountain biking, hiking, mountain climbing or trail running, the National Ski Patrol is helping to create a more enjoyable and safe experience for mountain resort guests in the summer too.
Subaru has been successful linking its name with the skiing industry since research shows 50 percent of Subaru customers ski or snowboard, but they also found out 60 percent of Subaru buyers like to hike or backpack, and 60 percent go camping. Subaru also has had ties with the International Mountain Biking Association, and with several brands of skis, canoes and outdoorsy clothing over the years. It’s what the Subaru brand is all about.
It’s a partnership that has worked for Subaru of America for over four decades. Subaru’s 2018 Outback wagon is still synonymous with skiing and winter sports, but it’s also about summer adventures like mountain climbing, hiking, trail running, mountain biking and camping. The National Ski Patrol’s wrapped Subaru Outbacks are now patrolling the mountains in the winter and summer.
