If you don’t want to wait for a new 2020 Subaru Outback to arrive check out the best used cars. Outback is the best wagon.

The newly-redesigned 2020 Subaru Outback won’t arrive until this fall, but if you don’t want to wait, a slightly used model is not a bad idea according to CarGurus.com. The Outback SUV/Crossover is a good used car pick in the station wagon category in their latest 2019 Best Used Car Award Winners.

The 2019 awards help customers identify the best recent-year used models across sixteen body style categories that are best slightly used over driving a new car off the showroom floor. The awards are based on the company's analysis of long-term projected value retention, driver satisfaction, professional reviews, and model popularity and availability.

They say a 2015-2018 Outback is the best choice in the Station Wagon category and the Volkswagen Golf SportWagen takes second with the MINI Cooper Clubman running in third place in the awards. The 2013-2016 Subaru Crosstrek takes third place in the Small Crossover/SUV category in the same awards.

Is buying used always better?

Before you buy new or used, it depends on what your families needs are. Buying a slightly used Outback or Crosstrek is not always the best according to reports from Kelly Blue Book and ALG. The Outback SUV has secured multiple segment wins over the Kelley Blue Book Best Resale Value Awards’ 17-year history, and the Outback SUV/Crossover earned its fourth win in the Best Mid-Size SUV/Crossover (2-Row) segment.

In ALG’s 2019 Residual Value Awards, Subaru gets five individual segment awards and they are singled out to be the top mainstream brand. The Subaru Outback is Best Midsize Utility-2 Row, and Crosstrek takes Best Subcompact Utility in the recent awards. According to a study by iSeeCars.com, there are a few vehicles like the new Subaru Crosstrek and Impreza models, where you don’t have to pay much more for a new model and the price difference can be less than $3,000.

So is a slightly used 2015-2018 Subaru Outback better than waiting for the newly-redesigned 2020 Subaru Outback SUV? If you don’t want to wait and don’t want to spend new-car money, you can save thousands of dollars over buying that new model. Many customers want a used model as a second car making Outback a good choice. If you get a new 2020 Subaru Outback this fall, the SUV will come with a 3-year/36,000 mile vehicle warranty and a 5-year/60,000 mile powertrain coverage. Before you buy new or used, determine what is best for your individual situation.

Good read Denis. UsedFirst.com, which is entirely dedicated to depreciation, also has Subaru ranked as the top consumer brand. The Outback is one of their top overall at 3 and 5 years.
