What cars are the best for teen drivers? The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and Consumer Reports says the 2022 Subaru Outback and Legacy are among the best new car choices. Check out the recommended used Subaru model picks for younger drivers.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and Consumer Reports have updated their best new and used cars for teen drivers' recommendations. The 2022 Subaru Outback and Legacy are now picked as the best new cars for younger drivers. The best used car choices are listed below.
The cars and SUVs picked by the IIHS and Consumer Reports are best for anyone looking for a new vehicle. The IIHS likes cars that help avoid collisions and have the best crash tests, and Consumer Reports looks at reliability and road-test performance.
The 2022 Subaru Outback midsize SUV and the 2022 Subaru Legacy sedan are recommended best for teens because young drivers have crash rates almost four times higher than older drivers. The two new Subaru base models on the list do not cost more than $29,000, including destination.
Cars were also chosen because of their weight (over 2,750 pounds) which rules out the smallest vehicles, which tend to be most vulnerable. Cars also must have standard forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking and must be Top Safety Pick or better from the IIHS. They also should have the highest five-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
What is the price of the 2022 Outback?
The 2022 Outback comes in eight trim levels; the base trim is priced from $28,820, Premium ($31,020), Limited ($35,470), Touring ($39,370), Onyx Edition XT ($37,020), new for 2022, Outback Wilderness ($38,870), Limited XT ($39,870), and Touring XT ($41,820). Pricing includes $1,175 destination and
delivery fees.
What is the price of the 2022 Legacy?
The 2022 Legacy sedan comes in six trim levels. We have included the price increase on each trim after the new pricing. The 2022 midsize sedan starts at $24,490 for the base trim, Premium ($26,740), Sport ($30,285), Limited ($31,440), Limited XT ($35,990), and Touring XT ($37,690). Destination and delivery fees are included in the pricing above ($995).
How safe are Subaru vehicles?
Subaru's vehicles with standard Symmetrical all-wheel-drive excel in all-weather driving, but the brand is also known for its exceptional crash protection and safety record. The Outback and Legacy models are IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus winners.
Why do the Subaru models excel in Consumer Reports road test scores?
The Subaru Outback and Legacy use a Boxer engine, bringing a unique balance quality that sets the models apart from the competition. Scientifically, balance is the body's ability to maintain its center of gravity above its support base.
No other automaker offers a flat-four Boxer engine in all its vehicles. The horizontally-opposed design allows the engine to sit low in the chassis lowering the center of gravity, giving the SUV excellent balance and the best driving dynamics. A driver can make a mistake in a Subaru vehicle and not get hurt because they tend to be more stable than other cars and sport utility vehicles.
The best used vehicles for teens
The IIHS and Consumer Reports also picked the best used vehicles for teens. The 2013 or newer Subaru Outback (midsize car), 2018 or newer Subaru Crosstrek (small car), 2015,2018-2022 Impreza (small car), and 2013 or newer Legacy (midsize car) are best used vehicle picks.
The used car starting price of the Impreza is $11,000, Crosstrek is $19,900, Legacy is $8,300, and Outback is $8,800.
The 2022 Subaru Outback and Legacy are the best new car choices for teens, according to the IIHS and Consumer Reports. You can check out each model's road test scores here.
