How is Subaru of America doing to start the new year? The 2022 Subaru Outback and 2022 Crosstrek are in demand, and the Camden, N.J. automaker can’t get enough for its U.S. customers.

Subaru of America’s inventory challenges continue. The 2022 Subaru Outback and 2022 Crosstrek models are in demand, retailers are trying to get their hands on more all-wheel-drive vehicles and Subaru has to juggle where new models are shipped.

Subaru of America (SOA) reported Outback sales dropped 10.7 percent to start the new year with 10,527 midsize SUVs delivered to customers in January compared with 11,784 models in January 2021.

SOA reported Crosstrek sales dropped 8.7 percent to start the new year with 9,527 subcompact SUVs delivered to customers in January compared with 10,431 models in January 2021.

Subaru of America is the Japanese automaker’s largest market, selling close to seventy percent of its new cars around the globe. SOA’s sales dropped 4.8 percent to start the new year 44,158 vehicles sold compared with 46,400 in January 2021.

Subaru would likely be setting new records if not for the ongoing semiconductor shortage and supply chain issues. The all-new 2022 Outback Wilderness is a success, and the 2022 Crosstrek is the brand’s hottest model.

Subaru Corporation has to juggle where it ships the newly-refreshed 2022 Forester, Outback, Crosstrek, and other new models. The Japanese automaker also has to keep other global markets like Canada supplied with new models. Subaru of Canada reports record January sales and the best January ever for Ascent, Crosstrek, and Outback models.

If Subaru retailers had more Outback midsize SUVs, and Crosstrek subcompact SUVs they could have sold more, but some of those new models had to be shipped to Canada. It’s the harsh reality of where Subaru finds itself with supply chain issues and the recent plant shutdown in Japan.

How does Subaru of America deal with the new car shortages?

Customers who want a new Outback, Crosstrek, Forester, and other new models are ordering the trim and color they want and waiting for their new all-wheel-drive vehicle to arrive from the plant where it’s manufactured. One example is a happy customer who ordered her new Crosstrek from Cross Creek Subaru in Fayetteville, NC, and took delivery recently.

"We built our new Crosstrek and ordered delivery to Cross Creek Subaru. The staff here is truly wonderful. Subaru is an amazing company. Hassle-free can't be said often when buying a car, BUT our experience was truly hassle-free!” Says Alexandra Sager.
