Subaru Corporation revealed some new features on the next-generation Subaru Forester. See what's possibly coming to the compact SUV.
Subaru does not release new information on its next-generation Subaru Forester; they leak it out in Japanese models first, and then we see it in the U.S.-specification models. That's what they just did with the new Forester X-Edition trim level.
I recently wrote that the Forester is Subaru Corporation's strategic global vehicle. Those are Subaru's words they used to describe its compact SUV. The Japanese automaker knows they have to get the next-generation Forester right, which is coming in 2025.
Here is additional information Subaru revealed on the new Forester X-Edition exhibition model just uncovered at the Japan Mobility Show. The new X-Edition is the outdoor-themed Forester trim for active customers looking to "challenge the outdoors."
"In addition to the popular access key compatible driver's seat position memory function and seat heaters on the left and right rear seats, the Touring is equipped with features such as water-repellent fabric/synthetic leather seats and water-repellent cargo floorboards, making it ideal for everyday use or outdoors. Equipped with easy-to-use items as standard equipment, it supports customers' desire to challenge the outdoors."
A driver's seat position memory function
According to Subaru's description, we can see the Forester X-Edition gets a few new features that will show up on the next-generation models. It will have a driver's seat position memory function controlled with the key fob.
The U.S. spec 2024 Subaru Forester Touring has a memory seat function but not on the Forester Sport or Wilderness trim levels. The 2025 Forester Sport and Wilderness could get this new feature.
Water-repellent fabric/synthetic leather seats
The Forester X-Edition also comes with water-repellent fabric/synthetic leather seats. Before now, the leather seats in the Touring trim have not been water-repellent. Only the StarTex water-repellent upholstery is currently available on the Wilderness trim.
Water-repellent cargo floorboards
The new Forester X-Edition also comes with water-repellent cargo floorboards that have not been available before. Active customers who use the Forester for outdoor activities will appreciate the new feature, and will make cleaning up dirt, sand, and mud easier.
Next-gen Forester comes into focus.
I expect U.S. customers will see the new features on the next-generation 2025 Subaru Forester compact SUV. Look for Subaru to upgrade the next-gen Forester Wilderness with heated rear seats, which are only available on the Touring trim level now.
The 2025 Forester Sport and Wilderness may also get the new water-repellent fabric/synthetic leather seats as an option on the two trim levels as an upgrade over the cloth seats now available.
Forester X-Edition Hybrid
The Forester X-Edition is an e-Boxer hybrid not offered in the North American market. There is speculation that the next-generation 2025 Subaru Forester will be offered as a hybrid trim for U.S. customers. The new North American Forester would be different than the Japanese specification e-Boxer.
I have covered a Forester hybrid before, and Subaru engineers are working with Toyota now to develop new hybrid technology for its U.S. spec models. Subaru has not released information on which models will get the hybrid technology, but the Forester is a likely choice.
The new 2025 Forester will bring significant upgrades in technology and safety. I don't know if the Forester will get new engine upgrades with a hybrid powertrain or a 2.4-liter turbocharged Forester Wilderness. Because Subaru is tight-lipped about its new model launches, it's speculation.
The Subaru Forester X-Edition is the outdoor-themed trim level in Japan. Look for the Japanese automaker to add new features to the U.S. spec Wilderness and possibly the Sport trim for the 2025 models. Customers want a Forester Hybrid. Will Subaru offer a next-generation Forester with hybrid technology in North America? Stay tuned.

I’ve been a Subaru fan since…
I’ve been a Subaru fan since I started driving, first car was an 80 DL 2dr hatch. I’m not a fan of the size of the new products- too far fat to be nimble. I currently building an 05 Forester, it goes through some tight spots that the new big boys can’t negotiate. Just sayin, maybe have an option? Make the Wilderness huge and downsize the Forester? Or just a more agile little mountain goat of a vehicle.
