The 2017 Subaru Outback gets new luxury upgrades for Canadian buyers. Is Outback getting too soft?

For 2017, the Subaru Outback gets a new Premier trim that goes upscale. The Outback is no longer just a wagon for adventure seekers. It’s a near luxury multi-purpose vehicle that you may be afraid to take off-road. The Outback gets softer and gentler for buyers looking for a more upscale wagon. What new Outback luxury is available for Canadian consumers?

New for 2017

You may be afraid to take this Outback camping on the weekends. Subaru Canada announced the addition of the 2.5i Premier with Technology Package and 3.6R Premier with Technology Package trim levels. Outback is more luxurious than ever. On the outside, it comes with a dark titanium grille, 18-inch wheels with a dark grey high-gloss finish, low-profile silver roof rails, plated door handles and side sills. A new Brilliant Brown Pearl exterior finish is available only on these models.

On the inside, the upscale cabin gets woodgrain and high gloss black interior accents, and a plush Java Brown leather interior. Outback Premier is almost too nice to throw your fishing gear into after a day in the back country. This Outback could be driven to a dinner gala and handed off to the valet. Another new feature for 2017, is the 2.5i Limited and 3.6R Limited models, now come standard with a heated steering wheel for those cold Canadian winters. New safety features are coming too.

2 New safety features makes Outback safer for 2017

Safety gets upgraded on the 2017 Outback too, with new preventative safety technology. The Technology Package available on the 2.5i Touring, 2.5i Limited and 3.6R Limited models, and standard on the 2.5i and 3.6R Premier models, now comes with Reverse Automatic Braking. The system assists the driver by detecting large objects and helping to avoid a possible collision when the vehicle is moving in a low speed reverse direction. Four ultrasonic sonar sensors located in the rear bumper cover, can automatically stop the vehicle if the driver doesn’t respond quickly enough.

High Beam Assist is another new feature standard with the Technology Package. This feature will automatically switch the headlights to low beam when the system detects either a vehicle in front or an oncoming vehicle, then returns to high beam when the road ahead clears.

For the 2017 model year, all Outback 2.5i models have a larger battery with more cold cranking amps, making it easier to start the vehicle on days with low temperatures. The rear child safety seat tethers have improved visibility for greater convenience.

Is the 2017 Subaru Outback getting too soft? It’s still a recreation-purposed wagon for adventure enthusiasts in all trim levels. With the new Premier trim, it gets near-luxury features to set it apart for a more upscale experience. Even though its all-wheel-drive will take you, owners may not want to take it into the back country for those off-road weekend excursions.

First you complain that the interior is too cheap. Then you complain that the interior is too luxurious. Maybe, next, they can design an interior that is just right, Goldilocks.
