The all-new 2020 Outback will be one of the New York shows bigger debuts. What can customers expect?

The first Subaru Outback made its global debut in 1994 at the New York Auto Show and was a car-based alternative to the traditional truck-based sport utility vehicle. It came with 7.3-inches of ground clearance making it an effective off-road vehicle. Now, 25 years later, Subaru Corp will debut the all-new 2020 Outback again at the New York International Auto Show. This sixth-generation 2020 Outback will stand tall in New York, come with 8.7-inches of off-road clearance, and will offer customers even more extreme adventures.

The all-new 2020 Outback will be one of the New York shows bigger debuts, but don’t expect any wild exterior design changes because that’s not what Subaru is about. This new Outback will be about offering the same conservative styling like the Legacy that just made its debut at the 2019 Chicago Auto Show.

The Outback SUV/Crossover will receive a few exterior updates, including a slightly redesigned front end and rear changes to the taillights resembling the new Legacy and Ascent stablemates. Customers will benefit from Outback likely getting a wider tailgate opening. But bigger changes are coming.

Hitch it up

One of the biggest changes will come under the hood as Outback will get the new Subaru Ascent-sourced FA 24 2.4-liter turbocharged Boxer engine. The current-generation 2019 Subaru Outback will tow up to 2,700 lbs, while the new Subaru Ascent with the 2.4-liter turbo engine has the ability to handle heavy-duty loads with a max towing capacity of 5,000 lbs. With the new 2.4-liter turbo engine, Subaru could bump up the tow rating on the new 2020 Outback for those wanting to tow a bigger trailer.

New architecture

When the sixth-generation 2020 Outback arrives this summer another big upgrade will come underneath the exterior skin. Outback will get the new Subaru Global Platform (SGP) offering a modular chassis. The new-generation model will come with increased rigidity in the body and chassis translating to improvements in ride quality and handling, in addition to less noise and vibration in the cabin. Look for Outback to be the safest one yet in its 25-year history.

The all-new 2020 Subaru Outback SUV makes its world debut at the New York Show on Wednesday, April 17 at 11:15 a.m. Eastern. The show runs from Friday, April 19 and ends on Sunday, April 28, 2019. Stay tuned.

That's misleading to say that the Outback with automatically be able to tow more if it comes equipped with the FA2.4 engine.
The 2.5L engine in Australia (Which is the same as the 2.5L in North America) is rated to tow 3,300LBS, it is more to do with government ratings/classifications and braking than the ability to move the trailer/boat/etc.
You can hook up a Crosstrek to A 5000LB trailer and be able to tow it, but braking would be a whole other story.

So does this mean the new Outback will not come with a 3.6L option? They have already taken away manual transmissions. What more will they take away?!

If the MPG on the 2020 Outback (with a turbo) is as subpar as the MPG on the 2019 Ascent, I'm glad I purchased a 2019 Outback 2.5i Touring.

Yes the transmission is CVT but it is evolved and improved by Subaru each time and today is very reliable - one of the best. Now if we can just get your mind to evolve!
