A new report from Subaru says the new model 2022 Forester and 2022 Crosstrek production increased while the 2022 Outback decreased. Here is what it means for customers this spring.

Subaru says production and exports from Japan increased as the impact of the production suspensions and adjustments due mainly to the global shortage of semiconductors was smaller compared to last year. Production increased 5.5 percent in January, the first increase in seven months.
The report says production at its plant in Lafayette, Indiana decreased due to the production adjustments due to the global shortage of semiconductors. Production fell 4.0 percent, the second consecutive month of decrease for Subaru of Indiana Automotive.

In Japan, Subaru manufactures the Forester and Crosstrek, Subaru of America's top-selling models. The Subaru WRX, WRX STI performance sedans, and Subaru BRZ sports coupe are also manufactured at the main plant in Gunma, Japan.
The plant in Lafayette, Indiana, manufactures the Outback 2-Row SUV, Ascent family hauler, Impreza compact sedan and hatchback, and Legacy midsize sedan models.
How do the new production numbers affect customers in the U.S.?
Subaru's ongoing supply chain issues and microchip shortages affect new model production of its new Forester, Crosstrek, WRX, WRX STI, and BRZ models manufactured in Japan. Subaru Corporation shut down the Gunma plant for eight days in January and February and restarted the assembly lines on February 22, 2022.
What will happen to current new model orders?
If customers have custom ordered a 2022 model year Forester, Outback, Crosstrek, or other new models from a U.S. retailer and production started before the shutdown; they should stay on the current delivery schedule.
Is the 2023 Subaru Solterra production affected?
The new Subaru Solterra all-electric compact SUV is manufactured at Toyota's plant in Japan. Toyota has experienced the same microchip shortages and supply chain issues. Subaru of America says the Solterra will arrive in June or July 2022.

The good news is Subaru reports increased production for the models made in Japan, and Forester, Crosstrek, WRX, WRX STI, and BRZ shipments should increase from Japan to the U.S. customers.
Subaru reports production of the 2022 Outback, Ascent, Impreza sedan, and hatchback, and Legacy sedan models at the Lafayette, Indiana plant decreased in January. This may cause further delay of some models.
