There is a new normal for 2021 Subaru Forester and 2021 Crosstrek shoppers. See what is happening at many Subaru of America retailers.
Are you shopping for a 2021 Subaru Forester or Crosstrek and can't find one on dealer lots? No problem, order it. Because Subaru of America is experiencing a shortage of the popular Forester compact SUV and Crosstrek subcompact SUVs, retailers now have customers order the color and trim level they want. They wait for the new vehicle to arrive from Japan.
Why is Subaru low on Forester and Crosstrek models?
A new report from Automotive News (by subscription) says Subaru's U.S. inventory shrank to just a seven-day supply in the latest quarter, compared with an already tight 18 days at the end of April. Demand is high for Forester and Crosstrek, and the microchip shortage has made the supply of the two models even tighter.

Subaru Chief Financial Officer Katsuyuki Mizuma said last week, "In the U.S., car demand has been very strong on the back of economic recovery, and our sales have been robust as well. We think we could have sold more if there had been more in our inventory."
The new normal
Subaru expects to be around 40,000 vehicles short for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2022. Many customers can wait for their new all-wheel-drive vehicle, and Subaru doesn't have to turn customers away. Since many automakers also have depleted inventory, Subaru isn't losing customers to the competition.

What about the 2022 Subaru Outback inventory?
Subaru manufactures the 2022 Outback, Ascent, Impreza, and Legacy models in Lafayette, Indiana, only for North American customers. Inventory of these models is much better than Forester and Crosstrek SUVs manufactured in Gunma, Japan.
When will Subaru's Forester and Crosstrek inventory return to normal?
Subaru says the global microchip shortage could begin to ease in October through March, so it could take six to eight months for inventory levels to return to normal.
The new normal for Subaru customers; you can order a new 2021 Subaru Forester and 2021 Crosstrek model and wait for them to arrive from Japan.
