The new 2020 Subaru Forester and 2020 Legacy are CR Top 10 Picks of 2020. See why they shine brightest among all other Compact SUVs and mid-size sedans.
Consumer Reports (CR) says the new fifth-generation 2020 Subaru Forester and newly-redesigned 2020 Legacy are the best of the best cars this year picked from hundreds of current models rated by CR and backed by survey data from hundreds of thousands current owners. The reports come from CR’s latest 10 Top Picks of 2020: Best Cars of the Year report (by subscription).
The two Subaru models have some of the highest overall scores in their categories, factoring in road tests, predicted reliability, owner satisfaction, and safety. CR only picks 2020 models that come standard with forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection. The Subaru brand just scored 9 vehicles in the IIHS 2020 Top Safety Pick ratings.
In the $25,000-$35,000 price range, the 2020 Subaru Forester is the Top 10 Pick of 2020 in the fastest-growing segment, Compact SUV category. Forester gets the number one ranking of 16 compact SUVs that are available for consumers.
CR picked Forester for its “combination of practical design, high owner satisfaction, and impressive fuel economy.” Forester gets impressive fuel mileage at 26/33 city/highway mpg and 29 combined mpg. CR also says the fifth-generation Forester gets high marks for ride quality, responsive handling, easy access with hip-height seats, and great visibility.
Another Subaru vehicle scored the Best Top 10 Picks Of 2020 in the mid-size sedan category. The newly-redesigned 2020 Subaru Legacy scores best among 16 other sedans. CR praised the new Legacy for its smooth ride, standard all-wheel-drive, its all-new 2.4-liter turbocharged engine, and it’s redesigned interior.
CR says, “The cabin has cushy armrests and a well-designed center console with a padded cutout for the driver’s right knee. The wide trunk opening makes loading and unloading quite easy; there are few better sedans in that respect. The closely related Outback wraps the Legacy’s virtues in a more versatile, outdoorsy package that’s equally desirable.”

I am amazed at the frequency
I am amazed at the frequency I see publications about how great the new Forester is. I bought a 2020 Forester and in extreme conditions (I live in Alaska), it is by far the most dangerous and least reliable car I have ever owned. The dealer can't find anything wrong yet in cold weather, all I have to do is tap the breaks and they lock up until I come to a stop (usually in a snow bank or intersection).
I have a 2019 Forester with
I have a 2019 Forester with the same problem in Minnesota. After the first snowfall, the brakes would lock up as soon as I tap the brakes, sliding me thru a Stop sign. I suspected the OEM tires, so drove my ‘17 Highlander on the same stretch and it handled the braking just fine. So I took a chance and threw away the Forester OEM BRIDGESTONE ECOPIA H/L 422 PLUS tires and got Michelin Defenders tires. The difference was night and day. Now my Forester grips the snow/ice roads just fine. Conclusion is that Subaru put cheapie tires on their new cars that are completely useless on snowy or icy roads. I wish they wouldn’t do that. My tire dealer told me that the particular Bridgestone tire is also OEM on new Honda CRVs. I hear the same dangerous experience from a 2018/19 CRV-driving friend. Hope my experience help explain what you’re seeing.
