The refreshed 2022 Subaru Forester just picked up an advanced technology award. See why Subaru ranks highest overall in a new Tech Experience study.

Nearly everyone can relate to backing up in a parking lot and not seeing a vehicle coming down the aisle. The 2022 Subaru Forester comes with a new safety technology called reverse automatic emergency braking that can keep a rear-end accident from occurring.

Advanced Technology Award

J.D. Power announced the 2022 Forester wins the Emerging Automation award in this year’s 2021 Japan Tech Experience Index (TXI) Study. The report says Subaru ranks highest overall in the Innovation Index. Mercedes-Benz ranks highest among luxury brands.

The 2022 Forester is the highest-ranked mass-market model receiving the new award for its reverse automatic emergency braking technology.

J.D. Power says the 2021 Japan TXI Study focuses explicitly on installing features on new vehicles and owner usage and problems experienced with these features, as well as their intentions to recommend and repurchase, based on 32 features that include advanced safety technologies such as active driving assistance.

The overall Innovation Index ranking is calculated based on the installation and usage of new features on new vehicles and owners’ evaluations. Subaru is the highest-ranking brand this year, and additionally, Subaru ranked high in the J.D. Power 2021 Japan Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study released earlier this year.

The 2021 Japan Tech Experience Index (TXI) Study is based on responses from 19,615 purchasers of new vehicles in the first two to 13 months of ownership. The study was conducted from May through June 2021.

Subaru scored 561 points overall, followed by Mercedes-Benz (527), Lexus (500), Nissan (483), BMW (470), Mazda (452), Toyota (448), and Volkswagen (444). The industry average is 443, and Audi, Mitsubishi, Honda, Mini, Suzuki, and Daihatsu scored below the average.

The refreshed 2022 Subaru Forester’s reverse automatic emergency braking technology is the feature owners like the best and earns the compact SUV the Emerging Automation award in this year’s 2021 Japan Tech Experience Index (TXI) Study. Check out the safety feature in the video below.

My '21 Outback XT Onyx has RAB. TXI recognition of the '22 Forester is probably refelcts smaller vehicle prevalence in Japan over the larger Outback. Subaru has distinguishes itself by moving safety technology down the model and trim levels once developed and produced, unlike many other brands. Owner satisfaction results demonstrate approval.

40 years ago, my dad said essentially the same thing about seatbelts. And 20 years ago, he said the same thing about airbags. Both were available and proven technologies, and both let him live to the age of 94.

The RAB on Mazda's CX-5 is great too. It has saved me on numerous occasions when backing up into a parking lot.

We have RAB on our 2019 Forester Limited, and we like it so much that I predict we will never buy another car that does not have this feature.
