The 2016 Subaru Outback get its fifth award this year. Why is it in the midsize car category?
The Subaru Outback doesn’t usually get put in the midsize car segment, but the wagon walks away with an award in the highly competitive category. Subaru Canada announced that the 2016 Subaru Outback was named Midsize Car of the Year by Auto123.com. The Subaru Outback is getting more civilized as it gets older and the new-generation model earns its fifth award this year.
The SUV-alternative Outback picks up the award in Canada where it’s touted for its toughness and go-anywhere attitude. It looks like the Outback’s perception is changing. Shiro Ohta, chairman, president and CEO of Subaru Canada, Inc. was surprised by the announced award and says, ”To have the Subaru Outback recognized by Auto123.com in the midsize car category places the Outback at the forefront of a highly competitive segment.”
Auto123.com designates a total of 15 awards each year and uses a variety of specific categories based on vehicle criteria. This year Outback was put in the midsize car category and walks away with the Midsize Car of the Year. It’s not the only award for the Outback wagon. This is the fifth award it’s received this year.
Subaru Outback was also named as the Car Guide’s (Le Guide de l’auto) Best Buy in the Mid-Size SUV under $50,000 category. The Outback was also given the nod by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC), awarded the 2015 Best New SUV/CUV (Under $35,000).
Other recognition that the Subaru Outback received this year was the ALG Residual Value Award, Midsize Utility (2 row) Segment for five consecutive years. The wagon did achieve one other midsize car award as the Canadian Black Book Best Retained Value Award in the Mid-Size Car Category for the past six years.
The 2016 Subaru Outback seems to be highly versatile and could be considered a wagon, a crossover, and an SUV multi-purpose vehicle. The Subaru Outback is getting more civilized and it’s being recognized again in the mid-size car category.
