New 2021 Subaru Forester, Crosstrek, WRX, and WRX STI inventories drop to new lows for Subaru of America. What's in store for new car shoppers?

If you are shopping for a 2021 Subaru Forester, Crosstrek, WRX, WRX STI, or BRZ, you know Subaru of America has few models to sell. The Camden, N.J. automaker has the tightest inventory of any automaker in America.

A new report from Automotive News reveals Subaru of America has an eight-day supply of vehicles as of July 1, 2021, the lowest of any car brand. Subaru is the only automaker with an inventory of new cars in single digits. Several brands had retail supplies of less than 25 days, Cox Automotive told AN, including Toyota (19 days) and Kia (19 days).

AN said the eight-day supply for Subaru of America includes retailer stock on their lots and models in-transit from the Subaru plant in Lafayette, Indiana, and Gunma, Japan.

The 2022 Subaru Outback, Ascent, Impreza, and Legacy are manufactured at the U.S. plant, and there are more of these models on retailers' lots. The 2021 Subaru Forester, Crosstrek, WRX, WRX STI, and BRZ are manufactured at the plant in Japan. Subaru has the lowest retail supplies of Forester, Crosstrek, WRX, WRX STI, and BRZ.

The retail shortages are due to plant closures this year. Subaru Corporation cut production at Japan's two Gunma plants on July 16 due to the global shortage of microchips. "It is part of the production adjustment due to shortage of semiconductors," a Subaru spokesperson told Automotive News.

Subaru of Indiana Automotive has been shipping 2022 Subaru Outback models, and retailers have the best supply of the midsize SUVs for customers. The 2021 Ascent 3-Row SUV is also a model with modest supplies.

A report from a retailer in Ohio says Subaru of America has assured their inventory of new Subaru vehicles will be back to normal levels "probably by August."

A Subaru retailer close to Denver, Colorado, told Torque News that customers are purchasing new Subaru models still in transit from the two Subaru plants. The two Subaru models that are the hardest to come by: the 2021 Subaru Forester Sport and the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek Sport with the new 2.5-liter engine.

Customers wanting one of these two Sport trims will have to wait until August or September to find one, or buyers can order one in transit and wait. Subaru of America has not released information on the 2022 Forester or the 2022 Crosstrek model changes yet. Stay tuned.

In mid June I traded my 17 Outback for a beloved ‘21 STi base. Was able to get KBB avg. of 20k for Outback, but also able to get the Sti for sticker, 38k. Win-win. Used Susie’s in high demand meant that dealer was fair on trade. Love my Sti and so grateful to have dodged that bullet. But a t Ciocca Subaru in Allentown I was also shocked to see a bare parking lot, usually full of new Subarus.
