Subaru of America announced the newly-upgraded 2023 Legacy. The Legacy midsize sedan gets new updates with a redesigned front fascia, the latest version of EyeSight safety technology, and a new wide-angle mono camera. Subaru also updated Legacy's multimedia system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
What's new for 2023?
The refreshed 2023 Subaru Legacy will be available in Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, and Touring XT trim levels. Legacy receives a new front fascia, a more prominent grille, and redesigned LED headlights. The Sport trim now comes standard with the 2.4-liter turbocharged engine, and Subaru will drop the Limited XT trim level. A new wide-angle Mono Camera is added to 2023 Legacy Touring XT trim levels.
The new wide-angle Mono Camera works together with the dual-camera EyeSight system. Subaru says, "The additional camera further expands the field of view to recognize pedestrians and bicycles sooner when the vehicle enters an intersection at low speed. EyeSight alerts the driver and, when necessary, applies brakes to avoid collisions with crossing bicycles and pedestrians."
Added safety tech
In 2023 Legacy models equipped with Blind-Spot Detection with Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert; EyeSight now includes Automatic Emergency Steering. The systems work in conjunction to help avoid a collision with an obstacle at speeds less than 50 mph.
Legacy comes with Subaru Starlink and an 11.6-inch Multimedia Plus system with wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto with a full-screen display. Subaru says the updated system offers improved on-screen controls for audio, heating, AC, and vehicle features.
New 360-degree heated steering wheel
Included with the all-weather package, Legacy has a new 360-degree heated steering wheel, standard on Sport and Touring XT. The new feature keeps a driver's hands warm at any position.
What is the 2023 Legacy fuel mileage?
With gas prices rising (AAA average price is $4.45), the Legacy gets outstanding fuel mileage.
The EPA says the Legacy XT 2.4-liter turbocharged engine returns an estimated 24 mpg city/32 mpg highway and 27 combined mpg. The standard naturally aspirated 2.5-liter flat-4 engine gets an EPA estimated fuel economy of 27/35 mpg city/highway and 30 combined mpg.
Will Subaru of America keep the Legacy sedan?
Although sedan sales are dropping as the market trends shift to SUVs, Subaru of America will likely keep the midsize sedan in the lineup. The Legacy gets a complete redesign for the 2024 model year, which will reveal more of Subaru's intentions with the Legacy. Stay tuned.
Our take
The 2023 Legacy stays in the lineup and gets new safety tech to keep the midsize sedan among the safest new cars you can buy. Legacy gets new luxury and tech features sedan buyers are looking for. We would like to see Subaru add a head-up display that would add an extra level of luxury and safety performance. The Legacy is still the only sedan with standard all-wheel-drive making it the best all-weather performance sedan for customers.
The upgraded Legacy midsize sedan will arrive in U.S. showrooms this fall. The refreshed 2023 Subaru Legacy will be available in five trim levels, Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, and Touring XT. Pricing will be announced closer to the retailer launch.
