The next-generation 2022 Subaru BRZ had a 162 percent jump in sales. Here's why it's not that impressive.
Subaru of America reports the next-generation 2022 Subaru BRZ had a massive 162 percent jump in sales in July. It sounds impressive, but the BRZ had zero sales in July 2021, which is why even a few sales would have seemed like a big jump.
The completely redesigned 2022 Subaru BRZ sports coupe was the first model, which was reported to be sold out in January. Because of its affordability and new design, the 2022 BRZ was a big success. Kelley Blue Book (KBB) said it sold out because the sports car met Subaru of America's initial allotment. Subaru USA stopped 2022 BRZ orders, and a report from KBB said customers who wanted a new BRZ would have to wait until 2023 models arrived. But that's not the case.
The 2022 Subaru BRZ was supposed to be sold out for the entire year, but it never went offline. Subaru of America reported they delivered 228 next-generation 2022 BRZ sport coupes to its U.S. customers in July, and it's up 162.3 percent through the first seven months of 2022.
In June, Subaru sold 193 sport coupes; in May, BRZ had 201 sales; in April, it had 298 sales, March 291 sales, February 349 sales, and January 331 sports coupes sold. Through the first seven months, Subaru has sold 1,891 next-generation sport coupes to U.S. customers.
How can Subaru sell so few BRZ models and keep it around?
Subaru Corporation didn't build the next-generation BRZ to be a high-volume model. It's a global sports car and has a worldwide connection with sports enthusiasts.
Subaru produces the BRZ/GR86 sport coupes at their Gunma plant in Japan. Subaru sells the BRZ globally, along with the Toyota GR86, and needs Toyota's sales volume to keep BRZ around. Their sales aren't enough to justify production. Yasuyuki Yoshinaga, President and CEO of Subaru Corporation, told Automotive News, "Without Toyota's volume, it wouldn't be viable for Subaru to build the car by itself."
Subaru is taking orders for the 2023 BRZ
The 2023 Subaru BRZ is still a good performance value at under $30,000. What is the price of the 2023 Subaru BRZ?
The 2023 Subaru BRZ Premium with a 6-speed manual gearbox has a starting price of $28,990. BRZ Premium with an automatic transmission starts at $30,590. The Limited (6-speed manual) has a starting MSRP of $31,490. The Limited with an automatic transmission starts at $33,290. All pricing includes destination and delivery fees ($995).
How long will it take to get the BRZ delivered?
The good news is that the 2023 Subaru BRZ is online for customers to order. The bad news is that a source close to Subaru told us that customers who order a 2023 BRZ sport coupe today should expect a six-month wait to get the 2023 model year.

The BRZ and 86 have a waiting
The BRZ and 86 have a waiting list about a year long. You cannot get 1 if you wanted to. The sales numbers look low, but they are selling every single one that they produce. If they want to sell more they need to make more.
