Will the next-generation Subaru Crosstrek come with a 6-speed manual transmission? See why it may be a thing of the past.
Subaru Corporation announced the world premiere of the next-generation 2024 Subaru Crosstrek subcompact SUV, and it gets a complete remodel with new upgrades. Will the third-generation Subaru Crosstrek come with a 6-speed manual transmission? Subaru could drop the manual gearbox in the new subcompact SUV.
Subaru says improvements have been made to the Lineartronic automatic transmission to reduce vibration and noise, but there is no mention of the manual transmission.
Subaru of America has not announced the next-generation 2024 Crosstrek yet, but Subaru Corporation could drop the 6-speed manual in the new model. The manual gearbox is standard in the 2023 Crosstrek Base and Premium trim levels and not available in the Sport, Limited, or Hybrid trims.
Why will Subaru drop the Crosstrek manual transmission?
Subaru has a goal of zero fatal accidents by 2030, and they want every model and trim level in the lineup to be equipped with EyeSight safety technology. EyeSight is not offered on any Subaru model with a manual gearbox because it's incompatible with the safety system.
The new 2024 Crosstrek will now come with the latest generation EyeSight driver assist technology and Driver Monitoring System called Driver Focus to offer another level of safety and help reduce the chance of accidents.
So far, Subaru has not been willing to invest the resources needed to make its EyeSight driver assist safety technology compatible with a manual transmission.
Subaru wants the Crosstrek, WRX, Impreza, and BRZ to earn the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award across the entire lineup. Currently, the Crosstrek, Impreza, and WRX without EyeSight don't get the highest scores and can't be included with the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) automatic models.
There is a chance Subaru could keep the manual
Subaru Australia managing director Blair Read said recently that Subaru Corporation is working on keeping the 6-speed manual gearbox in the new Crosstrek, WRX, and BRZ.
Read recently told journalists at the 2022 WRX launch, "We are working on bringing Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) onto manual variants. We're just not in a position to do that just yet."
"From a Subaru perspective, we would like to see it as soon as possible, and it's something that we work closely with Subaru Corporation on and something that's definitely on our radar to get to market as soon as possible. Subaru Corporation has supported and worked to make it happen for us."
Subaru Australia also announced the new Crosstrek is coming with a refined direct injection 2.0-liter Boxer engine and a Lineartronic automatic transmission with 8-speed paddle shifters with a manual mode. But there is no mention of a Crosstrek trim level with a 6-speed manual transmission.
Will the next-generation 2024 Subaru Crosstrek come with a 6-speed manual transmission? It may be a thing of the past. Subaru of America will announce the new U.S.-spec Crosstrek soon, and we'll find out. Stay tuned.
