The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek arrives now, and sales are slipping with the hot Crosstrek behind the Forester and Outback. Check out what happened in August and what's coming for customers this fall.
What happened to the Subaru Crosstrek? Subaru of America (SOA) reported August sales, and the Crosstrek dropped again, making it two months in a row. The next-generation 2024 Crosstrek subcompact SUV arrived, and sales should be up, but they are down.
SOA reports the new Crosstrek was down 7.9 percent in August. Subaru delivered 13,920 Crosstrek subcompact SUVs to customers in August, compared with 15,126 in August 2022.
In August, the Forester was significantly ahead of the Crosstrek with sales of 15,294 models, up 45.9 percent. And the Outback was also ahead of Crosstrek with 14,503 models delivered in August, up 32.7 percent. Forester is up 31.7 percent in the first eight months, and Outback is up 11.7 percent. The Crosstrek is up for the year's first eight months of 2023, but only by 2.0 percent.
Even with the downturn in sales, Crosstrek is still second in the lineup behind Outback year to date, with 101,291 models sold in 2023.
Why did Crosstrek, the sales leader in 2022, drop behind? Sales have slipped as Subaru Corporation changed the model from the second-generation Crosstrek to the all-new third-generation 2024 Crosstrek.
Subaru Corporation made a significant change in the manufacturing of the Crosstrek. The Japanese automaker continues to make the 2024 Crosstrek Base and Premium trim levels in its Gunma Japan plant, but it shifted manufacturing of the 2024 Crosstrek Sport and Limited trim levels to its Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA) plant in Lafayette, Indiana.
The Crosstrek Sport is the top-selling trim level, and SIA is making the model for the first time. The U.S. plant is also making the all-new 2024 Crosstrek Wilderness, and it's taking time to retool the plant's assembly lines and get up to speed to make the three new Crosstrek trim levels.

The 2024 Crosstrek gets a complete remodel from the ground up, whereas the Forester is a carry-over model, and the Outback received only minor changes. It's taking Subaru Corporation and SIA longer to ramp up production of the all-new 2024 Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, and the outdoor-themed Crosstrek Wilderness trims.
What is the price of the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek?
For 2024, the Crosstrek will be available in Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, and Wilderness trim levels and has a starting price of $26,290 (the same MSRP as the 2023 Base model equipped with the Lineartronic CVT automatic transmission).
The 2024 Crosstrek Premium has a starting price of $27,440, Sport ($30,290), and Limited ($32,190). Pricing includes destination and delivery fees ($1,225). The Crosstrek Wilderness costs $33,290, including dealer destination and delivery fees ($1,295).
In August, the Crosstrek sales drop again, the second straight month. Look for the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek to rebound as the next-generation models arrive now, and the all-new 2024 Crosstrek Wilderness comes this fall. Stay tuned.
