Subaru announced the 2019 Subaru BRZ with suspension and aero upgrades. And a new Japan-spec BRZ STI Sport trim.
The Subaru BRZ sports coupe is already six years old and it’s due for a complete remodel. Subaru Corp is making improvements to the first-generation BRZ and just announced more upgrades for the 2019 BRZ model year and a new Japan market STI model. Performance fans should see these changes made to the 2019 BRZ coming to other global markets.
Subaru announced the newly-upgraded 2019 BRZ with get special suspension upgrades that should improve the already sporty performance handling of the rear-drive sports coupe. Subaru says the sports coupe gets optimized damper tuning which will improve the sports car’s plant-ability and will also improve control and handling.
The aerodynamics of the BRZ should improve with the added fins and improvements to the rear wheel arches. Subaru says they were added to the BRZ to help suppress air turbulence at the rear of the sports coupe.
The BRZ STI Sport announced is not a limited edition model with only a few examples being produced, but will join the BRZ lineup for the Japan market. Subaru has not announced any changes to the BRZ’s naturally aspirated 205hp 2.0-liter boxer engine.
The Subaru BRZ sports coupe is still the best sports coupe for the money, but it needs a remodel. Subaru has confirmed BRZ will see a second-generation model along with its twin, Toyota 86. The remodel should come sometime in 2020 and it will be the next-to-last Subaru model to get the new Subaru Global Platform.
This new architecture could bring big changes to the rear-drive sports car. Look for the second-generation Subaru BRZ to come with additional safety features, and it will likely come with the brand’s EyeSight driver assist system. Recent reports say the all-new 2020 BRZ/86 rear-drive coupe will come with improved performance and possibly the Ascent-sourced twin-scroll turbocharged 2.4-liter Boxer powerplant. Stay tuned.
