Subaru made it official, they drop the Crosstrek Hybrid, but a new variant is on the drawing board.
We’ve been talking about Subaru discontinuing the 2017 Crosstrek Hybrid for a few weeks, and Subaru just made it official. The Crosstrek Hybrid has been dropped by the Japanese automaker, but a new improved variant is already in the planning stages. Subaru says, this is temporary and a new Hybrid model is already on the drawing board. Will it be the Crosstrek?
Subaru hasn’t confirmed the new Hybrid model will be the Crosstrek, but it’s likely the model to get the new powertrain. The Crosstrek is the next Subaru model in the lineup due for a major overhaul after the new 2017 Impreza compact, and it’s the most likely candidate to be upgraded with the newest hybrid technology.
In a recent press release from Subaru, Jeff Walters, executive vice president of sales, Subaru of America, Inc. said, “It is important to note that we are not leaving the hybrid market permanently. We are currently working on a new hybrid vehicle, although it is too early to discuss specifics.”
Subaru introduced the 2017 Crosstrek Hybrid tS in Japan and it’s been upgraded by Subaru Tecnica International. This model won’t ever reach U.S. shores, but it’s Subaru’s plan to introduce more STI-enhanced models like the Crosstrek Hybrid tS in the future. Subaru has big plans for the next-generation Subaru Crosstrek. It all starts with the new-gen models.
More new models on the way
Subaru will be upgrading all their new-generation vehicles to the new Subaru Global Platform, like the 2017 Impreza, and Crosstrek is next to get the new architecture, probably in 2018. Subaru won’t just be adding a new Crosstrek Hybrid, they will be bring out a new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and a full electric vehicle in the future.
Subaru made it official, they drop the 2017 Crosstrek Hybrid, but a new variant has been in the planning stages for some time now. Look for a new 2018 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid with the Subaru Global Platform next. Stay tuned.
