In an updated ranking, Consumer Reports (by subscription) says fourteen compact SUVs priced from $25,000 to $35,000 will keep you and your family safe. They recommend these models because they come standard with automatic emergency braking (AEB) with pedestrian detection, AEB that works at highway speeds, blind spot warning (BSW), and rear cross-traffic warning (RCTW).
Where does the 2023 Subaru Forester rank?
Consumer Reports says the Subaru Forester is the second-ranked compact SUV you can buy today, priced from $25,000 to $35,000. The Honda CR-V Hybrid now moves up to the top spot.
CR only recommends vehicles that also scored well in road tests, comprising more than 50 objective and subjective evaluations. On top of that, they have good reliability and essential advanced safety equipment. They also performed well in government and insurance industry crash tests.
Subaru Forester gets an overall score of 87 points, and Honda CR-V Hybrid is now number one with a score of 88 points.

The Honda CR-V Hybrid and Subaru Forester are followed by the Hyundai Tucson Hybrid (83), Nissan Rogue (81), Kia Sportage Hybrid (80), Mazda CX-50 (78), Toyota RAV4 Hybrid (78), Toyota Corolla Cross (77), Mazda CX-5 (77), Ford Escape Hybrid (70), Honda HR-V (73), Mitsubishi Outlander (72), Chevrolet Trailblazer (70), and Kia Seltos (70).

What are Subaru Forester's safety scores?
All 2023 Forester trim levels earned the Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). It also gets the highest five-star rating from the NHTSA. The IIHS says the 2022 Forester meets all the criteria for the highest award because of its standard front crash prevention system, which has earned superior ratings in recent tests.
What safety tech does the Forester have as standard equipment?
All Forester trim levels, from the Base model to the upper Touring trim, receive a "Superior" rating in front crash prevention from the IIHS.
