How safe is the 2023 Subaru Outback? The IIHS says the Outback is among the ten vehicles with the lowest number of deaths. Subaru has a second vehicle ranked in the top twenty with the lowest number of deaths.

Which Subaru all-wheel-drive vehicle is the safest? According to recent calculations by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2023 Subaru Outback is the safest new vehicle you can buy. The Subaru Ascent 3-Row SUV is not far behind.

Eighteen of the 23 vehicles with the lowest driver death rates are minivans or SUVs, and 12 are luxury vehicles.

The IIHS says the latest rates are based on fatalities that occurred from 2018 to 2021 for vehicles from the 2020 model year, as well as earlier models with the same designs and features. The numbers represent the estimated risks for 2020 models. Still, the data include models from as far back as 2017 if the vehicles have yet to be substantially redesigned over the intervening period.

The Subaru Outback is the ninth vehicle on the list to have the lowest rates of driver deaths, with five. IIHS calculates deaths per million registered vehicle years for 2020 and equivalent earlier models.

The Subaru Ascent is not far behind the Outback as one of the safest new vehicles. Ascent is the tenth vehicle on the list to have the lowest rates of driver deaths, with six.

What are the vehicles with the highest driver death rates?

The IIHS says six of the 21 vehicles with the highest driver death rates for the model year 2020 are variants of the Chevrolet Camaro, Dodge Challenger, Dodge Charger, and Ford Mustang, while eight others are small cars or minicars.

This year for the first time, IIHS also calculated the best and worst models according to the number of drivers in other vehicles killed in crashes with them.

The lowest rates of other-driver deaths are calculated per million registered vehicle years, 2020 and equivalent earlier models.

Two Subaru vehicles rank among the best.

The Subaru Ascent midsize SUV is the fourth safest vehicle, with 16 other-driver deaths. The Subaru Forester compact SUV also makes the list and is ranked the eighth safest with 21 other-driver deaths.

IIHS says, “Crash avoidance systems and other advanced safety features are most often standard equipment on luxury vehicles, as well as the three Subaru models (Outback, Ascent, and Forester) that rank among the top performers on both lists.

In contrast, crash avoidance is optional on nearly all the worst performers, many of which also fall short of a good rating in at least one IIHS crashworthiness evaluation.”

The Subaru EyeSight driver assist safety technology is standard on all 2023 Subaru Outback, 2023 Subaru Ascent, and 2023 Subaru Forester trim levels. The IIHS says they are the safest new models with the lowest driver and other-driver deaths.
