The U.S. Subaru plant in Lafayette, Indiana where they make the 2020 Outback and Ascent models, has extended its production shutdown until May 8. A statement by Subaru Indiana Automotive says, “In response to COVID-19, SIA has extended its shutdown through Friday, May 8.
Only limited personnel will be working on-site during this time.” Around 5,700 plant employees have been affected and put on furlough April 13.

The Japanese automaker makes the newly-redesigned 2020 Outback wagon, all-new 2020 Ascent 3-Row family hauler, Impreza compact, and Legacy sedan at the Indiana plant. The four Subaru models built in the U.S. supply customers in North America. Subaru says they extended plant shut down because of declining market demand and supply chain issues related to the coronavirus pandemic. Because sales have dropped, Subaru is now offering special deals on 2020 Forester, Outback, and Ascent models but it could be best for SUV shoppers to wait.
Torque News reported the Subaru factory would originally close March 23-29. Three weeks ago we reported the Japanese automaker extended what was supposed to be a week-long closure through April 6. Then on April 1, we reported Subaru had extended its plant shutdown through Friday, April 17. Now the company says it plans to resume production on Monday, May 11.
What does it mean for SUV shoppers?
Subaru sales have dropped dramatically since the coronavirus health issue hit the globe. Last month Subaru saw a huge decline of 47 percent. Thie Camden, N.J automaker will likely see a bigger drop in sales in April. Many dealers have closed and customers are waiting to see what happens before making a car purchase. If you wait to buy a new Forester, Outback, Ascent or other Subaru model, you could get a great deal. Automakers are experiencing the largest drop in sales in decades, and they will be highly motivated to move vehicles off their lots when they do open back up for business.
The 2020 Subaru Forester compact SUV, Outback wagon and Ascent family hauler are three of the best-selling models in the all-wheel-drive lineup. When things return to “normal”, Subaru should have an ample supply of SUVs for shoppers as inventory is stacking up with few sales by dealers across the U.S. and Canada.
However, if you have to purchase a Subaru vehicle now, the automaker is offering special deals. Subaru of America is offering zero-percent financing on all 2020 Forester, Outback, Ascent, Impreza, and Legacy models, for 63 months. Dealers are currently open and selling cars, so why, when sales are SO FAR DOWN is it not better to do it now?

At least a couple of Indianapolis Chevy, Ford, etc. dealers are offering 0% for 72 & 84 mos on most models. If Subaru would up their current 63 mos to 72 mos, I’d buy tomorrow. I wonder if that’s a possibility...

0% for 72 and another another rate for 84 months as well as payment assurance for losing your job due to COVID would be a step in the right direction. Upping their Maintain the love program from 2 to 3 years would also cover many lease customers who going into a 36 month lease and be on par with Hyundai & Toyota as well as offering incentives for Healthcare/ First Responders would be a nice step for May.

I don’t personally need all that, however, in the USA market it is what the competition is doing and when other major car companies are offering those incentives that are direct competitors of Subaru it is something that consumers are going to consider in the upcoming months if they do need to purchase a car during this period of uncertainty. Personally our lease will be coming up in the next few months and while we look around the rav 4 hybrid awd, Ford Escape hybrid awd come in at a fairly competitive price once those incentives have been put in and bring the price pint down to a premium or touring forester and/or ascent models.
