Subaru Is Quickly Running Out Of The 2021 WRX and WRX STI

If you want a 2021 Subaru WRX, there aren’t many left. Subaru ends production to make way for the all-new 2022 WRX.

Performance customers who want one of the last 2021 Subaru WRX performance sedans will need to act quickly. Subaru Corporation is ending production of the fourth generation models to make room on its assembly lines in Japan for the all-new 2022 WRX.

Subaru of America reported only 341 WRX and WRX STI sales for January. In contrast, Subaru reported December 2021 sales of 2,037 performance models delivered to customers to finish the year.

2021 WRX and WRX STI sales were exceptionally strong in 2021 before the next-generation 2022 Subaru WRX arrives. Subaru delivered 27,141 2021 WRX and STI performance sports cars to U.S. customers in 2021, a 28 percent increase from 2020.

What’s next for the 2022 WRX?

The 2022 WRX should arrive this spring according to Subaru. There could be delays with production because of the ongoing supply chain shortages and the recent plant shutdown in Japan, where the WRX is manufactured.

Performance enthusiasts will have to wait for the next-generation 2023 WRX STI to roll out next year.

What is the price of the 2022 Subaru WRX?

Subaru of America has not announced pricing on the new fifth-generation WRX.

The next-generation WRX will likely get a significant bump in price. The current price of the 2021 WRX is $28,420 with the 6-speed manual, including the destination fee. The Lineartronic CVT costs an extra $1,900. The base model will still be less than $30,000, making it a good performance value. The 2022 Subaru WRX GT with the Performance Transmission (CVT) will cost about $2,000 more than 6-speed manual models.

Fuel mileage performance drops for the 6-speed manual

The EPA recently announced fuel mileage for the new 2022 WRX 2.4-liter turbocharged engine. The 2022 Subaru WRX with the 6-speed manual gets 19/26 city/highway and 22 combined mpg, a drop of one mpg over the 2021 model. The 2021 WRX 2.0-liter engine had 20/27 city/highway and 23 combined mpg.

But the 2022 Subaru WRX with the Subaru Performance Transmission (CVT automatic) improves one mpg city/highway. The 2022 WRX CVT gets 19/25 city/highway and 21 combined mpg. The 2021 WRX 2.0-liter engine with the CVT had 18/24 city/highway and 21 combined mpg.

If you want a 2021 Subaru WRX, there aren’t many if any left for U.S. customers. Subaru of America reports only 341 WRX and WRX STI sales to start the new year. Yes because the incoming 2022 is horrible.
From the looks to the 3 more horsepower, it’s an utter fail.
