Subaru revealed two new concepts coming to the Tokyo Auto Salon. Check out the details and why you want them in your garage next year.
Subaru Corporation is bringing two new concept vehicles to the Tokyo Auto Salon 2023 in January, and they revealed them today. Here is what they are and why you want them to go from concept to a production model available for U.S. customers.
The first vehicle is the Crosstrek Boost Gear Concept vehicle. The new subcompact SUV is based on the all-new next-generation 2024 Crosstrek that made its global debut earlier in December. Subaru Corporation says the new model will come “scattered with features which excite an adventurous mind.”
This is speculation, but the Crosstrek Boost Gear Concept could be the forerunner to the U.S. specification 2024 Crosstrek Wilderness trim level. Crosstrek fans have been waiting for the Wilderness trim level for more than a year when the story broke that the Crosstrek subcompact SUV would get the more rugged Wilderness upgrades and be added to the Outback and Forester Wilderness sub-brand.
Outdoor enthusiasts would like to see the Crosstrek Wilderness come with a 2.4-liter turbocharged Boxer engine like its big brother, the 2023 Outback Wilderness. The 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft. of torque would make the new SUV a formidable off-pavement vehicle ready for the toughest challenge.
The second vehicle is the new REX Boost Gear Concept. Torque News brought a report about the new REX revealed in November. The new REX compact SUV is a Japanese specification vehicle powered by a new 1.2-liter 3-cylinder naturally-aspirated (non-turbocharged) engine.
The new engine deviates from the automaker’s Boxer engine design and is a Dual Overhead Cam (DOHC) engine design. The engine is mated to a CVT automatic transmission and produces 64kW (85 horsepower) and 113 Nm (83 lb. ft of torque.)
The new Subaru REX does not come with all-wheel-drive and is a two-wheel-drive configuration. The reason is Subaru Corporation made the new REX as fuel-efficient as possible. The 7-speed sequential shift CVT transmission has a DRIVE switch with city, suburban, and highway modes.
The REX Boost Gear Concept is a rugged version that sits higher and likely has Subaru’s Symmetrical all-wheel-drive system with X-Mode, and it looks ready to go off-road. It comes with 17-inch Yokohama Geolandar All-Terrain tires, LED fog lights, a front skid plate, and an upgraded suspension.

The Rex is another Subaru
The Rex is another Subaru/Toyota vehicle. These are starting to irritate me, subaru stands out because of the standard awd, boxer engine and incredible safety ratings. You take those elements away and subaru is just a Toyota. My guess is we're getting closer and closer to Toyota absorbing subaru entirely. Who wants a fwd non boxer powered subaru?
Currently have a '19 Forester
Currently have a '19 Forester Sport; my 3rd Subaru. I'm sure whatever rugged edition is produced will be gobbled up by enthusiasts. But any 3 cylinder engine should not be sold in USA. Extremely small engines are not suitable for longer distances experienced on US highways. They have to be operated at their peak & are just not that durable.
