Subaru Corporation releases fuel mileage for the Japan-spec 2022 WRX S4 and gives an idea of how much the U.S. 2.4-liter 2022 WRX numbers will improve.
With gas prices going up, performance fans will be happy to hear the 2022 Subaru WRX with a larger 2.4-liter turbocharged Boxer engine will get improved fuel mileage over the outgoing 2.0-liter turbocharged powerplant. The 2022 Subaru WRX will require premium gas to perform at peak efficiency, and the price nationwide is around $4.05 per gallon.
Subaru Corporation says the new 2022 WRX S4 2.4-liter turbocharged engine gets an estimated 18/30 mpg city/highway and 27 mpg combined mpg. The estimates come from Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism. The mileage increase is an improvement from the 2021 WRX 2.0-liter engine that gets an EPA estimated 20/27 city/highway mpg and 23 combined mpg.
The EPA has not released fuel mileage estimates yet for U.S. 2022 WRX performance models, but they should be similar. The 2022 WRX S4 does have more torque than the 2.4-liter engine in the U.S. models.
Subaru says the 2022 WRX S4 produces a maximum torque of 375 Nm (276 lb-ft) between 2000 and 4800 rpm. The U.S. spec 2022 WRX 2.4-liter turbocharged Boxer has a broader torque curve with 258 lb-ft of torque from 2,000-5,200 rpm but 18 lb-ft of torque less than the S4.
We don't expect much difference in fuel mileage from the WRX S4, but the new 2022 WRX 2.4-liter engine gets a significant improvement in highway and combined mpg over the outgoing 2.0-liter Boxer engine.
Like the 2021 WRX, we expect the 6-speed manual transmission sedan to get better mileage than the CVT automatic models. The WRX 2.0-liter engine with the 6-speed manual gets an EPA estimated 20/27 city/highway mpg and 23 combined mpg with 91 octane premium fuel. The WRX with a CVT automatic transmission gets 18/24 city/highway and 21 combined mpg.
The fuel mileage numbers released by Subaru Corporation for the WRX S4 are for the STI Sport trim with the new Subaru Performance automatic Transmission. The 2022 Subaru WRX with a 6-speed manual gearbox should be even better.

Makes me wonder why the 2.4
Makes me wonder why the 2.4 in the BRZ is in a much lighter car, has no forced induction, 2 less wheels being driven, is lower and more aerodynamic, yet somehow still gets worse MPG
Good question about the BRZ
Good question about the BRZ mileage vs the WRX. Having owned several early WRXs I found that one reason the mileage was not great is the right foot can get reallly heavy!
