Subaru is recalling certain Crosstrek, Impreza, BRZ models due to a faulty valve spring in the 2.0-liter engine. Scion FR-S is recalled by Toyota. See if your vehicle is on the list.
The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports Subaru of America has announced a recall affecting 2012-2014 Subaru Impreza, 2012-2013 Impreza wagon, 2013 XV Crosstrek, 2013 Subaru BRZ, and 2013 Toyota Scion FR-S vehicles. The engine valve springs in these vehicles may fracture causing an engine malfunction or a possible engine stall.
This is part of a massive global recall affecting the FB20 2.0-liter naturally aspirated Boxer engine used in all these vehicles. There are 165,534 vehicles in the U.S. potentially affected. Toyota is recalling around 25,000, 2012 Scion FR-S U.S. models. Toyota said it would contact affected U.S. owners by mail starting in December.
Subaru Corp says the faulty valve springs may be broken due to “excessive load” than they were originally designed to handle. It’s caused by “small foreign matter in the spring material due to general manufacturing variation.” Subaru says abnormal noise is generated and engine malfunction occurs, and in the worst case, the engine may stop running. The repairs won’t be cheap as Subaru believes the engine work will take more than 12 hours to complete.
Subaru of America will notify all XV Crosstrek, Impreza and BRZ owners and Toyota will notify the FR-S owners. Dealers will replace the valve springs, free of charge. Subaru has not yet provided a notification schedule. Subaru owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-844-373-6614, Toyota owners may contact the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-888-270-9371. Subaru's number for this recall is WTY-84.
