The 2019 Subaru WRX is rated the safest compact performance car in America. See how it compares with hot hatches VW Golf R, and Honda Type R.
Performance fans don’t usually think of safety when they buy a compact performance car, but you’ll be glad it’s there if you are ever in an accident. A sports car buyer can feel safe in crash protection when behind the wheel of the sport-tuned Subaru WRX. Subaru announced the 2019 Subaru WRX earned the TOP SAFETY PICK + award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). How does the performance car compare with the VW Golf R, Honda Civic Type R, and Ford Focus RS? The Subaru brand and WRX comes out on top for overall safety performance.
The 2019 WRX gets the top IIHS award when equipped with the brand’s EyeSight Driver Assist Technology and LED Steering Responsive Headlights. EyeSight is only available on WRX with the CVT automatic transmission. Subaru can’t install it on the 6-speed manual cars. It’s why the 2019 WRX STI doesn’t get the highest safety award, although the STI still gets high marks from IIHS.
