Should you buy the 2021 Subaru WRX and WRX STI, or wait for the fully remodeled performance sedan? See why you might not have a choice.
The 2021 Subaru WRX and WRX STI are not slowing down ahead of the next-generation 2022 Subaru WRX launch. Subaru of America announced the 2021 WRX and STI achieved 2,354 sales, increasing 8.5 percent compared to the same month a year ago.
Subaru Corporation is still producing the 2021 models because they haven’t run out of performance sedans yet. But that could change soon. A new report says used 2020 and older WRX and STI sports cars are now selling for more than new models because the inventory of new models is running low.
Subaru Report checked with a large Subaru retailer near Denver, Colorado, and they had no 2021 WRX or STI performance sedans on its lot. We found a 2015 Premium model for $20,999 with 105,391 miles.
We also found one 2020 Subaru WRX Limited trim for $35,999 with 5,898 miles on the odometer. A new 2021 WRX Limited has a starting MSRP of $33,020, including destination and delivery fees. That’s a $2,979 price bump for this used 2020 model over what a new WRX would cost.
When will the 2022 Subaru WRX and STI be available for sale?
Because of COVID last year and plant closures and the global microchip shortage this year, the next-generation 2022 WRX and STI launch have been delayed.
The next-generation 2022 Subaru WRX will be announced by Subaru of America sometime this fall and likely won’t arrive until early next year. Performance enthusiasts will have to wait for the next-generation 2022 WRX STI to roll out a year later.
Unless you can wait for the remodeled sport-tuned WRX or performance-tuned WRX STI, buying a used model may be the only option. And you will pay a premium price for a low mileage sports car.
The 2021 WRX and STI are not sitting on retailers’ lots very long. Subaru of America is selling every one they can get their hands on.
The 2021 Subaru WRX and STI have been hot models for Subaru of America all year. With the recent plant shutdown in Gunma, Japan, where the WRX and WRX STI are manufactured, there are now inventory shortages.
Subaru Report will bring the latest information on the 2022 Subaru WRX as soon as the automaker announces the next-generation changes. Stay tuned.
