Watch a cop car run a red light almost hitting a new Subaru WRX STI.
It happened in southwest Austin, TX on the afternoon of April 16, 2018. According to the driver of the STI, he had right of way, when a cop car with no lights and no sirens, ran a red light and almost T-boned the new white Subaru WRX STI. The video below clearly shows the WRX STI had the green light green. The STI driver says, “Had I not sped up at the last second to make it through the green it would've ended much differently, and much more tragic.”
Subaru is working on the solution for drivers like this distracted cop by developing their EyeSight driver assist technology. In a case like this, if the car running the red light would have had EyeSight, the brakes would have been automatically applied to avoid an accident or slow the car to minimize the damage.
The STI drivers goes on to say, “I see cops play around on their computers and phones all the time while driving these days. Are they above the law? What if this situation was reversed and I was the one who nearly T-boned a cop?” The Subaru WRX STI would have been cited for running a red light and received a hefty fine.
