It’s not surprising because the WRX STI features Subaru’s Symmetrical all-wheel drive system that is made for these conditions. Subaru perfected the all-wheel-drive system on the STI on the Rally stages where they have successfully won numerous championships around the globe. Subaru just won the Big White Rally in Kelowna, BC Canada with the 2016 Subaru WRX STI Rally car last week. Conditions at the rally race were extremely snowy and icy.
What makes the STI’s AWD system unique?
The WRX STI uses a special AWD system that is exclusive to the performance sedan called Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD). Because of the STI’s extra horsepower (305hp), the STI uses a limited-slip, planetary gear-type center differential, augmented by an electronically controlled center limited-slip differential. This provides for a performance-oriented 41:59 torque split. This allows the mechanically limited slip differential to have a quicker response and activates just prior to the electronic limited-slip differential.
