The 2024 Subaru Impreza has the hot hatch RS trim level, but where is the WRX hatch that everyone wants? Check out the possible new timeline.
Will Subaru bring back the WRX hatchback? Subaru dropped the sedan in the Impreza, which was the right move. Sedan sales are falling, and the Impreza hatchback is the one body style worth selling. Subaru made the right decision with the Impreza. Will they do the same with the WRX?
If it's the best for the Impreza compact car, it's even better for the next-generation Subaru WRX performance sedan. It's hard to believe, but it's been nine years since Subaru dropped the WRX hatch (in 2015), and it's time they bring it back.
Subaru waited for the next-generation Impreza to make significant design and trim changes. They could wait until the next-generation WRX launches sometime in 2029-2030 to make a major overall of the performance car lineup. Subaru may be waiting for the all-new WRX STe (coming around the same timeframe) to make significant changes and announcements.

Subaru Corporation announced the WRX hatchback in Australia and Japan but did not offer the 5-Door model in the U.S. market. Planet Subaru says, "For the crowds clamoring for its return to North America, take comfort that Subaru made the significant investment in engineering the car. Subaru might offer the hot hatch here when the global auto industry recovers from the chip shortage in the next year or two."

When will Subaru bring back the STI?
Subaru says, "As the automotive marketplace continues to move towards electrification, Subaru is focused on how our future sports and performance cars should evolve to meet the needs of the changing marketplace and the regulations and requirements for greenhouse gasses (GHG), zero emissions vehicles (ZEV), and Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE)."
Subaru says they are now exploring opportunities for the next-generation Subaru WRX STI, including electrification. "In the meantime, a next-generation internal combustion engine WRX STI will not be produced based upon the new WRX platform," Subaru said.

With the new STe patent, it's expected that Subaru customers will see an accelerated plan with its evolving performance division (Subaru Tecnica electric) and bring a new hybrid or all-electric Subaru WRX STe sooner than expected.
Subaru announced it is accelerating its global electrification plans. Those plans will include a new WRX hybrid powertrain and an all-new all-electric Subaru STe. The WRX hatchback could also be part of Subaru's future performance car plans. Stay Tuned.
