A mid-size sedan is still a good option for shoppers. See why the 2020 Subaru Legacy outscores the most popular models Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.
With SUVs and Crossovers gaining in popularity, why would you choose a mid-size sedan over a SUV? Not everyone needs a bigger vehicle. If you don’t have a family to haul around and you don’t use your vehicle for weekend adventures, you don’t really need that extra space. The advantage of a sedan over an SUV or crossover is its lighter, more aerodynamic, and it offers better performance and fuel economy.
Consumer Reports tests all sedans on the market and ranks them in order of an Overall Score. They use a combination of road-test scores, reliability rating, owner satisfaction rating, and performance in crash tests. Additional points are given when advanced safety systems come standard. The all-new 2020 Subaru Legacy outscored the most popular mid-size Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, and Mazda6 sedans.
The 2020 Subaru Legacy tops CR’s mid-size sedan ratings and gets an overall score of 87 out of 100 and rated #1 of 15 midsize sedans. The 2020 Toyota Camry has been rated the #2 midsize sedan with a rating of 86. The 2020 Honda Accord is rated #6 overall with a score of 82. The 2020 Mazda6 gets a total score of 80 and comes in at #8 of 15 midsize sedans.
What puts the Subaru Legacy on top?
Consumer Reports says the ride in the all-new Legacy outshines some luxury cars. Legacy rides on Subaru’s new Global Platform and it makes the difference. They say the sedan also has responsive handling, and the new 2.4-liter turbocharged engine offers strong acceleration and is quieter than the base 2.5-liter normally-aspirated engine. CR says, “We like that the well-tuned continuously variable transmission doesn’t let the engine get too loud.”
The Legacy gets the highest marks for safety from the IIHS and it comes standard with EyeSight driver assist technology offering forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking city and highway, and lane departure warning.
What CR doesn’t like about the new seventh-generation Legacy is the infotainment menu is not easy to use. They say “Unfortunately, users must wade into infotainment menus to perform some common tasks.”
The 2020 Subaru Legacy is still the only sedan in America that comes standard with all-wheel-drive, while the system on Camry is a $1,400 option. Accord and Mazda6 both come with standard front-wheel drive and there is no all-wheel-drive option. It’s another reason why the Legacy is rated #1 of 15 midsize sedans.
